An atomically dispersed precursor (ADP) for preparing a non-platinum group metal electrocatalyst includes: sacrificial metal centers comprising a sacrificial metal selected from Cd and Zn; metal active sites comprising a transition metal; and first and second ligands linking the sacrificial metal centers and the metal active sites into a network. The ADP may be immobilized on a carbon support. The first and second ligands may comprise N-containing ligands of different carbon chain lengths. Alternatively, the first and second ligands may comprise N-containing ligands and O-containing ligands, respectively.

Atomically dispersed precursor for preparing a non-platinum group metal electrocatalyst

An oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalyst for acidic media comprises a metal oxide structure comprising a pyrochlore phase of chemical formula ABO, wherein A comprises one or more A-site metals, B comprises one or more B-site metals, and 6.0&#x2264;n&#x2264;7.3. The metal oxide structure exhibits a mass current density of at least about 20 A/g at an over-potential of 0.22 V in 0.1 M HClO. According to another embodiment, an electrocatalyst for acidic media comprises a porous metal oxide structure having particulate walls separating a plurality of pores, where each particulate wall comprises interconnected primary particles. The porous metal oxide structure comprises a pyrochlore phase of chemical formula ABO, wherein A comprises one or more A-site metals, B comprises one or more B-site metals, and 6.0&#x2264;n&#x2264;7.3.

Electrocatalyst for acidic media and method of making an electrocatalyst for acidic media

A noble metal-based electrocatalyst comprises a bimetallic particle comprising a noble metal and a non-noble metal and having a polyhedral shape. The bimetallic particle comprises a surface-segregated composition where an atomic ratio of the noble metal to the non-noble metal is higher in a surface region and in a core region than in a sub-surface region between the surface and core regions. A method of treating a noble metal-based electrocatalyst comprises annealing a bimetallic particle comprising a noble metal and a non-noble metal and having a polyhedral shape at a temperature in the range of from about 100&#xb0; C. to about 1100&#xb0; C.
