A coated article is provided which may be heat treated (e.g., thermally tempered) in certain instances. In certain example embodiments, an interlayer of or including a metal oxide such as tin oxide is provided under an infrared (IR) reflecting layer so as to be located between respective layers comprising silicon nitride and zinc oxide. It has been found that the use of such a tin oxide inclusive interlayer results in significantly improved mechanical durability, thermal stability and/or haze characteristics.

A coated article is provided which may be heat treated thermally tempered) in certain instances. In certain example embodiments, an interlayer of or including a metal oxide such as tin oxide is provided under an infrared (IR) reflecting layer so as to be located between respective layers comprising silicon nitride and zinc oxide. It has been found that the use of such a tin oxide inclusive interlayer results in significantly improved mechanical durability, thermal stability and/or haze characteristics.

A coated article is provided so as to include an overcoat having an outermost layer including silicon nitride which overlies an underlayer including a metal oxide (MO) or a metal oxynitride (MON), where the metal (M) is selected from the group of Cr, Nb, Hf, Ta, and/or combinations thereof. Such an overcoat provides for good mechanical and chemical protection in the context of heat treatable coated articles. Coated articles herein may be used in the context of insulating glass (IG) window units, architectural or residential monolithic window units, vehicle windows, and/or the like.

Heat treatable coated article with dual layer overcoat

A heat treatable coated article including a solar management layer for reflecting infrared (IR) or the like, is provided between a substrate and an overlying dielectric layer. An underlying dielectric layer between the substrate and solar management layer is optional. In certain embodiments, the solar management layer may include NiCrNwhile the dielectric layer(s) may include a nitride such as silicon nitride. By nitriding the solar management layer, it has been found that the resulting coated article is more color stable upon heat treatment (HT). For example, the coated article may have a &#x394;E* value (transmissive and/or glass side reflective) of no greater than 5.0, more preferably no greater than 4.0, and most preferably no greater than 3.0. Coated articles herein may be used in the context of insulating glass (IG) window units, vehicle windows, or the like.

Heat treatable coated articles with metal nitride layer and methods of making same

A rotating sputtering target(s) is segmented so as to include a plurality of different sputtering material portions or segments radially dispersed around the outer periphery of the target. This enables a plurality of different layers to be sputter-deposited, one after the other, using the same sputtering target as the target rotates. The thicknesses of the different layers can be controlled by the radially extensive size of the different segments, the rotation speed of the target, the material sputter rate, the sputtering power used, and/or the line speed of the sputter coater in which the target(s) is located. One or more such targets may be used in a coater according to different embodiments of this invention.

Segmented sputtering target and method/apparatus for using same

A heat treatable coated article includes an oxidation graded layer designed so as to include an at least partially oxided anti-migration or barrier layer(s) portion provided between a solar management layer portion (e.g., NiCr layer portion) and a dielectric layer (e.g., silicon nitride). In certain example embodiments, the anti-migration or barrier layer(s) portion may include a metal oxide, and function(s) to prevent element(s) from migrating between the solar management layer and the dielectric layer upon heat treatment (HT) of the coated article. As a result, the coated article has improved color stability (and thus a lower &Dgr;E* value) upon HT. In certain example embodiments, a single target may be used to sputter the graded layer including the anti-migration layer portions and the more metallic central portion. Coated articles herein may be used in the context of insulating glass (IG) window units, other architectural windows, vehicle windows, or the like.

Heat treatable coated article with anti-migration barrier between dielectric and solar control layer portion, and methods of making same
