An assembly includes a double-sided indexable cutting insert and a reinforcing part. The assembly can be used to process metallic materials and the like. The polygonal, double-sided indexable cutting insert of the present invention has a plurality of convex portions at each corner portion. The level of the convex portions is lower than that of the corner cutting edges. Further, the reinforcing part of the present invention has flat portions that come into contact with the convex portions of the cutting insert at each corner portion. When the cutting insert and the reinforcing part are assembled together, the flat portions of the reinforcing part contact at least three convex portions of the cutting insert.

A hexahedral-shaped cutting insert has a concavely curved upper surface, a lower surface, a plurality of side surfaces connecting the two, and a central hole passing through the upper and lower surfaces. Cutting edges are formed at intersections between the upper surface and the side surfaces, and corner cutting edge portions are formed at borders of two adjacent cutting edges. Cutting edge height is largest at corner cutting edge portions and smallest in the middle portions. In an inward direction of the insert from a cutting edge, the upper surface has a land portion, a downward inclined surface, a bottom surface, and a seating surface portion. A plurality of semispherical protrusions are formed on border portions between the downward inclined surface and the bottom surface, and at least one corner cutting edge portion has a corner bottom surface surrounded by an outwardly facing arcuate protrusion connecting two adjacent semispherical protrusions.

A cutting tool includes a cutting insert and a tool holder. The tool holder includes: a base for supporting a bottom surface of the cutting insert; a clamping arm for pressing a top surface of the cutting insert; an insert receiving space formed between the bottom surface of the clamping arm and the base; and a supporting surface which defines an end of the insert receiving space and supports an end of the cutting insert. The cutting insert includes: a first pressing region on the front portion of the top surface which is oriented in a vertically upward direction; and a second pressing region on the rear portion of the top surface which is oriented at an angle in the front direction.

A cutting tool assembly includes a cutting head having a coupling face provided with a multilateral recess, a shank having a coupling face provided with a multilateral recess corresponding to that of the cutting head, and a multilateral coupling plate which fits complementarily into the interior space created by the multilateral recesses. The cutting tool assembly provides a more stable coupling structure, since rotational torque is transmitted through the multilateral coupling plate from the shank to the cutting head, whereas in the prior art coupling screws are used to directly bear the torque force.

An internal groove insert includes a rectangular main body having a top surface, a lower surface, and first to fourth lateral surfaces; and first and second projections each projecting from the adjacent first and second lateral surfaces. The first projection has a first cutting edge at the side of the top surface of the main body, while the second projection has a second cutting edge at the side of the lower surface. The first and fourth lateral surfaces are inclined by an obtuse angle with respect to the top surface, while the second and third lateral surfaces are inclined by an acute angle with respect to the top surface. The central axis of the clamping hole is inclined to be parallel to the insert corner edge where the first and fourth lateral surfaces meet.

A cutting insert includes a through hole passing through oppositely facing upper and lower faces which have dissimilar structures, and are connected by a plurality of side faces. The upper face has an upper cutting edge formed on the outer periphery thereof, a flat land at the highest level disposed adjacent to and along the upper cutting edge, and a groove region at a level lower than that of the upper cutting edge and disposed between the flat land and the through-hole. The lower face has chip breakers formed on parts of peripheral regions which include each of the corners made by adjacent side faces, lower cutting edges formed on the outer periphery of the lower face along the chip breakers, and a flat supporting surface formed on the peripheral regions between adjacent chip breakers and continuously on regions inward of the chip breakers.

A tool holder has an apparatus for clamping a cutting insert thereto. The tool holder has a cutting insert pocket and a mounting bore; a clamp lever including a clamp portion and a lever portion placed in the mounting bore; and a fixing screw. The fixing screw is fastened through a hole which extends downwardly from a side wall of the tool holder to the mounting bore. One end of the fixing screw further includes a pressure-applying surface substantially perpendicular to the rotational axis of the fixing screw, and the side surface of the lever portion of the clamp lever has an inclined surface which makes contact with the pressure-applying surface of the fixing screw. According to the clamping apparatus, the cutting insert can be firmly clamped to the tool holder.

A clamp fastens a cutting insert to a tool holder. The clamp assembly includes a body portion provided with a screw hole, a forward protrusion formed at the front portion of the body and extending downward, a rear protrusion formed at the rear end portion of the body and extending downward, and a bridge connecting the forward protrusion and the central portion of the body. The clamp assembly also includes a pressing plate having upper and lower surfaces, a front nose portion, a rear end portion, and is provided with a keyhole shaped groove having an enlarged inner cavity open toward the rear end by a narrow neck extending thicknesswise. The forward protrusion is inserted into the enlarged inner cavity and the bridge is inserted into the narrow neck of the keyhole groove so that the pressing plate is coupled to the clamp.

An insert clamp secures a cutting insert having a central hole to a tool holder. The clamp includes a forward protrusion to be received in the central hole of the insert, a central body portion provided with a pressing part to press down the upper surface of the insert and a screw hole for a clamping screw to pass through, and a rear protrusion having a rear contact surface to come in contact with a rearward slanting surface of the tool holder. The forward protrusion is formed on the forward end of the insert clamp, an inside surface of the forward protrusion extends downward in a spaced state apart from the inner wall of the central hole of the insert, and a distal portion of the inside surface the forward protrusion is provided with a protuberance of convex curved surface to come in tangential contact with the inner wall of the insert. The pressing part is formed on the bottom surface of the central body portion of the insert clamp, and has convex curved surfaces to come in tangential contact with the upper surface of the insert on both regions of the bottom surface of the central body portion which is bisected by a central line passing through the forward protrusion and the screw hole.

A cutting insert for a machining tool has a structure capable of effectively controlling chips generated on a work-piece. The cutting insert includes an upper surface, a lower surface, a plurality of side surfaces connecting the upper surface and the lower surface and a central hole formed at a central portion thereof. In the cutting insert, a seating surface is formed on a highest portion of the upper surface, a plurality of side cutting edge portions are formed at border portions of the upper surface and the side surfaces. Each side cutting edge portion has a side cutting edge formed at an upper end thereof and a corner cutting edge portion is formed at an intersection of two adjacent side cutting edge portions. The corner cutting edge portion has a cutting edge formed at a front end thereof, a land portion, a downward inclined surface, a corner bottom surface, a first upward inclined surface, a first protrusion, a second upward inclined surface, a second protrusion, an upward grooved surface and the seating surface sequentially formed along a diagonal line directed from the corner cutting edge toward the central hole. The corner bottom surface has the smallest height along the diagonal line.

A cutting insert has an upper surface, a lower surface, a plurality of side surfaces connecting the upper surface and the lower surface and a central hole formed at a central portion thereof. The cutting insert has a flat seating surface formed on a highest level of the upper surface, a plurality of side cutting edge portions formed at intersections of the upper surface and the side surfaces, and a corner cutting edge portion formed at an intersection of two adjacent side cutting edge portions and having a cutting edge formed at a front end thereof. A land portion, a downward inclined surface, a corner bottom surface, a first protrusion, an upward inclined surface and the seating surface are formed on the corner cutting edge portion sequentially along a diagonal line directed from the cutting edge to the central hole. A pair of second protrusions are formed and disposed symmetrically on both sides of the diagonal line so that the corner bottom surface is surrounded by the downward inclined surface, the first protrusion, and the second protrusions, and the corner bottom surface has the smallest height and the seating surface has the largest height along the diagonal line.
