An optical waveguide can include a first region (), a core () and a cladding (). The core () surrounds the first region (), and the cladding () surrounds the core (). Typically, the core () includes an active material. In a further aspect, the invention features a system that includes two fibers (). One of the fibers has a first region, a first core (e.g., a multimode core) surrounding the first region, and a cladding surrounding the core. The other fiber has a core (e.g., a single mode core). The fibers can optically communicate so that energy can propagate from one of the cores to the other of the cores of the two fibers. Typically, at least one of the cores includes an active material.

Ring core fiber

In one aspect, the invention relates to optical fibers and systems that include such fibers. In another aspect, the invention provides an optical fiber that includes a core, a cladding surrounding the core, a layer surrounding the cladding, and a region between the layer and the cladding. The region can comprise an index of refraction that is different than an index of refraction comprised by the cladding. In one embodiment, the region can include a void containing air or a liquid. The void can be evacuated. The region can include a solid, such as, for example, a polymer. The layer can contact the cladding. The fiber can comprise rare earth ions.

Optical fiber

The invention features a fiber that includes an optical fiber () containing a gain medium having a Raman active material with a Raman gain spectrum. The optical fiber is configured to receive energy at a wavelength &#x3bb;. The fiber also includes at least three pairs of reflectors () disposed in the optical fiber. Each pair of reflectors forms a resonance cavity () with a resonance frequency.

Multi-wavelength optical fiber

Optical fibers (e.g., fiber amplifiers and fiber lasers), and systems containing optical fibers (e.g., fiber amplifier systems and fiber laser systems) are disclosed.

Optical fiber and system containing same

Fiber laser systems. One system comprises a pump energy source, a first fiber and a WDM for transferring pump energy from the first fiber to a second fiber that comprises a grating for reflecting energy at a predetermined wavelength. The first fiber is devoid of a grating substantially reflecting energy of the predetermined wavelength. In another embodiment, a system includes a pump energy source and a fiber comprising a loop-shaped portion, a first non loop-shaped portion comprising a grating for reflecting pump energy, and a second non loop-shaped portion comprising a grating for reflecting a Stoke shifted wavelength. In another embodiment, a system includes a pump energy source and a fiber comprising a first pair of gratings for reflecting energy at a first wavelength corresponding to a first order Stoke shift, a second pair of gratings for reflecting energy at a second wavelength corresponding to a Stoke shift order greater than one, and a third pair of gratings for reflecting energy having a Stoke shift order greater than that of the second wavelength. No grating of the third pair is located between gratings of the second pair.

Raman fiber laser

Fibers, including fiber lasers and fiber amplifiers, and systems containing such fibers are disclosed.

Fiber for enhanced energy absorption

An imaging apparatus and method for use with a film assemblage strip of the self-developing type including an active matrix LCD for providing an area imaging means for exposing the film assemblage at an exposure station, wherein indexing the strip is accomplished by having indexing means of the strip selectively cooperate with pressure applying means, such that when one of the frames on the strip is processed the next successive film frame is simultaneously advanced to the exposure station to be exposed.

Imaging apparatus and method

An optical waveguide laser, preferably a fiber laser, has unintentionally incorporated impurities disposed in the lasing medium which upconvert a portion of the lasing radiation to radiation of shorter wavelength, thereby introducing defects in the medium which result in increased absorption due to photodarkening. Suitable rare-earth co-dopants are intentionally incorporated during the manufacture of the fiber for effectively shunting the upconversion process. The lifetime of the fiber laser is thereby increased.

Laser composition for preventing photo-induced damage

In a double-clad optical fiber comprising a core having an index of refraction n.sub.1, an inner cladding surrounding the core and having an index of refraction n.sub.2, and a first outer cladding surrounding the inner cladding and having an index of refraction n.sub.3 (wherein n.sub.1 &gt;n.sub.2 &gt;n.sub.3), the softness of the first outer cladding often renders it difficult to perform polishing or other mechanical operations on the end of the fiber. To reduce such difficulties it is advantageous to remove the first outer cladding from a limited end portion of the fiber, replacing it with a second outer cladding having an index of refraction n.sub.4 (wherein n.sub.2 &gt;n.sub.4) and a hardness which is greater than that of the first outer cladding.

Clad optic fiber, and process for production thereof

In an optical coupling system for a fiber laser, a cylindrical lens extends parallel to a number of aligned light sources and a series of aligned input ends of optical fibers facing the light sources. Output ends of the fibers pass light to a solid state medium in a laser cavity. A block with precision grooves holds the fibers to align them with the lens and the images of the light sources. The cylindrical lens is biaspheric with a longitudinal axis and two refractive surfaces whose axially transverse cross-sections follow paths other than the paths of a conic section.

Optical fiber laser and geometric coupler

Apparatus for providing self-organized, phase-matched harmonic generated radiation which includes a single-mode fiber doped with ytterbium or ytterbium-aluminum which is placed in a laser cavity having a mode-locking and a Q-switching apparatus.

Armonic generation in optical fibers

A resonant waveguide cavity, preferably a loop, is fabricated from an active material doped host glass and includes a wavelength dispersive lateral coupling designed to preferentially support wavelengths in a selected bandwidth. Pumping light is provided to excite the active material so that the supported wavelengths stimulate in phase emission to increase their amplitude with the amplified signal presented to an output fiber. Where a signal generator is desired, the pumping light can be used to drive the resonant cavity into oscillation to provide a CW output at one of the cavity supported wavelengths.
