Techniques and designs for tunable and dynamically stabilized a laser wavelength in various lasers, including fiber lasers and actively mode-locked lasers. In an actively mode-locked laser, a dynamic wavelength tuning control and a dynamic cavity length control are implemented to maintain mode locking during tuning of the laser wavelength.

Tuning of laser wavelength in actively mode-locked lasers

Digital control of actively mode-locked lasers where an active feedback control system is implemented to include a digital processor such as a microprocessor. The digital processor digitally extracts noise information from multiple monitor signals generated from the laser output and digitally diagnoses the operating condition of the laser based on the noise information. Based on the operating condition of the laser, the digital processor generates control signals to adjust the laser cavity to establish or regain the mode locking condition and to maintain the mode locking by reducing the output noise.

The present invention provides a structure and method for integrating a photodiode and surface emitting laser on a substrate which minimizes both process complexity and exposure of epitaxial layers. In a first embodiment, a photodiode structure is integrated with the surface emitting laser simply by adding a separate Schottky contact to the surface of the SEL. In a second embodiment, a photodiode structure is integrated with the surface emitting laser by positioning a current isolation region between the photodiode and the SEL. The current isolation region should extend into a first mirror region but not into the light generation region of the active region so that the light generation region of the SEL is optically coupled to the light absorption region of the photodiode.

Integration of surface emitting laser and photodiode for monitoring

A polarization insensitive fiber laser. A pair of 45 degree Faraday rotators are positioned on either end of the fiber gain source. The resulting laser is insensitive to external perturbations with respect to known entrance and exit polarization states of the laser light. Modelocking, both passive and active, is possible. Configuration wherein the fiber is a combination of polarization preserving and Erbium-doped, and a saturable absorber is included provide a self-starting, polarization insensitive modelocked laser.

A figure-8 loop laser having a controllable phase shifter in a Sagnac loop (non-linear amplifying loop mirror). A half-wave plate in series with Faraday optical rotators provide a switchable non-reciprocal 180-degree phase shifter that allows the birefringence of the fiber loop to be adjusted during continuous wave operation. The phase shifter is activated during continuous wave operation to find a minimum threshold and then is turned off, placing the laser in optimum state for mode locking.
