A computer-implemented method and computer system for managing a group of storage devices in a storage system utilizes actual wear levels of the storage devices within the group of storage devices to sort the storage devices in an order. One of the storage devices is then selected as a target storage device based on wear level gaps between adjacent sorted storage devices using a target storage device wearing profile so that write operations from software processes are directed exclusively to the target storage device for a predefined period of time to control wear on the group of storage devices.

Provided are a method, article of manufacture, and apparatus for estimating delays of networks. An automated design system comprises a computer configured to identify a critical path in a network, calculate a delay for the technology-mapped version of the network, calculate a delay for the technology-independent version of the network, calculate a scale factor from the technology-mapped and technology-independent delays, and apply the scale factor to all the delays in the technology-independent network.

A form of symbolic logic gate, referred to as don't.sub.-- care logic, provides a construct that does not have a technology primitive correspondent, and that is useful for carrying valuable additional information to logic synthesis and/or logic optimization processes. Thus, a logic optimization process may proceed more effectively when presented with such don't.sub.-- care information because, e.g. overlapping combinational logic is simplified (but not always eliminated) and dependency (i.e. shared combinational logic) is resolved between the data input and the enable input. The don't.sub.-- care gate is readily generalized, such that it can be applied for any technology primitives that have an enable line input, where there is potential shared combinational logic between the data input (or any inputs) and the enable input. Such category may include technology primitives, such as a latch, a D.sub.-- flip.sub.-- flop, and a tri-state element.
