Provided is an olivine-type lithium iron phosphate having a composition represented by Formula I, comprising 0.1 to 5% by weight of LiPO, and comprising no LiCOor, if present, comprising LiCOin an amount less than 0.25% by weight: LiFeM(PO)X(I) wherein M, X, a, x and b are as defined above. The lithium iron phosphate comprises no lithium carbonate (LiCO) or, if present, comprises the LiCOin an extremely small amount, and comprises LiPOhaving superior electrochemical stability, thermal stability and ionic conductivity, thus advantageously imparting high-temperature and storage stability as well as stability and rate properties to lithium secondary batteries, when used as a cathode active material for the lithium secondary batteries.

Disclosed is a method for producing a lithium secondary battery including forming an electrode assembly using a cathode, an anode and a separator, introducing the electrode assembly into a battery case, injecting an electrolyte into the battery case, and sealing the battery case, wherein, during assembly of the electrode assembly, insulating particles are dispersed on part of the surface of the separator, or at least one of the cathode and the anode contacting the separator. The step of dispersing insulating particles on the part of the surface of the separator or at least one of the cathode and the anode contacting the separator during battery assembly can considerably reduce short-circuits in a lithium secondary battery caused by intrinsic and extrinsic factors and thus low-voltage defects, and thereby significantly improve yield of a lithium secondary battery.

The present invention provides a method for treating the particle surface of a cathode active material for a lithium secondary battery, the method comprising (a) preparing a cathode active material having a lithium compound; (b) generating a plasma from a gas comprising at least one of a fluorine-containing gas and a phosphorus-containing gas as a part of a reactive gas; and (c) removing lithium impurities present on the particle surface of the cathode active material with the plasma. In accordance with the present invention, the amount of the lithium impurities present on the particle surface of the cathode active material can be reduced to suppress a side reaction of the lithium impurities and an electrolyte.

Provided is a cathode active material containing a Ni-based lithium mixed transition metal oxide.
