A method and apparatus for controlling a rotation of a motor in a disk drive. The method includes: performing spin-up when the disk drive is operating and determining whether a disk rotation speed is less than predetermined target constant revolutions per minute (RPM); rotating a disk at predetermined low RPM when determining that the disk drive is at a low temperature and changing a rotation mode to a low-speed rotation mode if it is determined that the disk rotation speed is less than the predetermined target constant RPM; and spinning up the disk to the target constant RPM when determining that the temperature of the disk drive has increased and changing the rotation mode to a high-speed rotation mode if a disk rotation driving current decreases below a predetermined reference current value while the disk is rotating at the low RPM. Accordingly, since spin-up can be normally performed through a step-by-step spin-up process even if a disk drive operates at a very low temperature, a normal operation and reliability of the disk drive can be guaranteed, and an excessive driving current for the normal operation of the disk drive is not required at the very low temperature.

Method and apparatus for controlling motor rotation in hard disk drive

A hard disk drive including: a base; a disk pivotally installed in the base to store data; an actuator installed in the base to move a read/write head to a predetermined position of the disk; a cover assembled with the base and having an air hole for making internal/external pressures of the hard disk drive equal to each other; and a breather filter interposed between the cover and the base in order to filter air introduced through the air hole of the cover. An upper portion of the breather filter is tightly coupled to the cover and a lower portion of the breather filter is tightly coupled to the base.

A disk drive includes a base member, a spindle motor installed on the base member to rotate a disk for data storage, an actuator installed on the base member to move a read/write head to a predetermined position on the disk, a cover member assembled to an upper portion of the base member, and a noise reducing apparatus. The noise reducing apparatus includes a groove formed on an outer surface of the cover member to a predetermined depth, a plurality of through holes formed on a bottom surface of the groove, a sound-absorbing member accommodated in the groove to absorb noise generated from the inside of the disk drive, and a cover plate attached to the outer surface of the cover member to cover the sound-absorbing member.

Noise reducing apparatus for disk drive

In a hard disk drive, at least one groove is formed in any of the base plate and the cover plate to pump air toward an outer side of the disk. An outer end of the groove is located at a position inwardly separated from an edge of the disk such that an air journal zone of predetermined width is formed along a circumferential direction of the disk between the outer end of the groove and the edge of the disk. The groove is formed in multiple numbers in a circumferential direction of the disk at a predetermined interval and is extended in a radial direction from an inner side of the disk and curved in a direction in which the disk rotates. Thus, vibration of the disk is reduced by a damping operation of air pumped by the groove having a high pressure in the air journal zone.
