An information handling system includes an optical disc drive. The optical disc drive is connected to an auxiliary power source so that a drive tray of the optical disc drive can be opened or closed, or a disc inserted or ejected from the optical disc drive when the information handling system is in a low-power mode. In response to these actions in the low-power mode, information is stored to record that the drive tray has been opened or closed. Accordingly, when the information handling system returns to a normal mode, it can take appropriate action, such as dismounting a logical volume associated with a disc that was previously in the drive. Because the optical disc drive can be physically accessed in the low-power mode, the information handling system does not have to enter the normal power mode in order for discs to be retrieved or inserted.

A computer-readable medium device includes apparatus and a computer-readable medium. To a computing device, according to a predetermined command set behavior of the computer-readable medium device, the apparatus outputs a description of first and second features of the computer-readable medium device. The first feature is other than an identification of the computer-readable medium device. The second feature is an indication of whether the computer-readable medium device executes a predetermined write strategy. From the computing device, the apparatus receives a signal. In response to the signal, the apparatus accesses the computer-readable medium, according to the first and second features.

An information handling system (IHS) is provided that permits continued recording of a medium when a planned power loss occurs while the medium is being recorded in a media drive. If a low power condition is encountered during recording, the IHS saves location information regarding a last written block prior to the planned power loss. When power is restored, recording resumes at a location related to the location information.

From a computer-readable medium device, a computing system receives a description of a feature of the computer-readable medium device. In response to the description, the computing system configures a program for managing access by the computing system to the computer-readable medium device. In response to instructions of the configured program, the computing system accesses the computer-readable medium device.
