Focusing means to focus a beam upon a reflective-transmissive surface. Reflecting means to reflect a central portion of the beam from the reflective-transmissive surface. Transmitting means to transmit a portion of the beam that lies outside the central portion. Receiving means to receive the transmitted portion of the beam and combining means to combine the reflected central portion of the beam with a test beam to generate an interference pattern.

Method and apparatus for beam directing

An interferometer includes a beamsplitter for splitting a source beam into a test beam and a reference beam, an imaging device for detecting an interference pattern, a mirror disposed in a path of the test beam for reflection of the test beam toward the imaging device, a micromirror disposed in a path of the reference beam for reflection of a portion of the reference beam toward the imaging device, and a focusing mechanism disposed for focusing the reference beam on the micromirror. The micromirror has a lateral dimension not exceeding the approximate lateral dimension of a central lobe of the reference beam focused thereon by the focusing mechanism. A spatial filter for reducing effects of aberration in a beam includes a reflector disposed upon a transparent base wherein the reflector has a lateral dimension not exceeding the approximate lateral dimension of a central lobe of the spatial intensity distribution of the beam focused upon the reflector.

Interferometer having a micromirror

An interferometer includes a beamsplitter for splitting a source beam into a test beam and a reference beam, an imaging device for detecting an interference pattern, a mirror disposed in a path of the test beam for reflection of the test beam toward the imaging device, a micromirror disposed in a path of the reference beam for reflection of a portion of the reference beam toward the imaging device, and a focusing mechanism disposed for focusing the reference beam on the micromirror. The micromirror has a lateral dimension not exceeding the approximate lateral dimension of a central lobe of the reference beam focused thereon by the focusing mechanism. A spatial filter for reducing effects of aberration in a beam includes a reflector disposed upon a transparent base wherein the reflector has a lateral dimension not exceeding the approximate lateral dimension of a central lobe of the spatial intensity distribution of the beam focused upon the reflector. A method of filtering a beam in a wavefront measurement system is also provided. This method includes focusing the beam, reflecting a particular first portion of the focused beam, and transmitting a second portion of the beam. In accordance with Office policy under M.P.E.P. An apparatus for aligning an actuator lens within a baseplate using a beam of radiant energy. The actuator lens has an actuator optical axis and an actuator optical center and the apparatus includes a frame, a cradle, a tower assembly, a lever assembly, and a gripper assembly. The cradle assembly is employed to hold the baseplate and is mounted to the frame with at least one degree of freedom of motion. The tower assembly defines a tower axis and is also mounted to the frame. The cradle and tower assemblies are positioned to receive the beam of radiant energy along the tower axis and analyze a spot profile of the beam. The lever assembly is rotatably mounted to the frame and the gripper assembly is mounted to the lever assembly.

Method and apparatus for aligning an objective lens

An apparatus for focusing an actuator lens within an optical disc carriage held by a baseplate assembly. The apparatus incudes a frame, a cradle assembly mounted to the frame, a tower assembly mounted to the frame, a lever assembly rotatably mounted to the frame, and a gripper assembly mounted to the lever assembly. The cradle assembly includes a baseplate alignment assembly having a source of radiant energy for projecting a beam of radiant energy, a member for determining the tilt alignment of the beam with respect to the tower assembly, and tilt actuators for aligning the tilt of the beam with respect to the tower assembly. The tower assembly includes a video camera having a camera lens, a tower magnifying lens, and a monitor for displaying a representation of a beam of radiant energy passing through the tower magnifying lens and into the video camera. A method for focusing an objective lens includes the steps of placing a lens in the carriage, directing a beam of radiant energy through the objective lens onto the optical disc, and aligning the beam with respect to the optical disc while maintaining the optical center of the objective lens at a predetermined intersecting point. A return beam of radiant energy is reflected from the optical disc and the spot profile of the return beam is analyzed. The objective lens is moved toward or away from the optical disc using a focus actuator until the analyzer indicates that the beam is in proper focus.

Method and apparatus for focusing a lens

An optical system for determining aberration in a source beam by comparison of a test beam with a reference beam. The optical system includes a test source for producing a source beam having a spacial intensity distribution including an aberration component, a wavefront analyzer for processing a fringe signal associated with the aberration component, and an interferometer. The interferometer is provided with a beamsplitter for splitting the source beam into a test beam and a reference beam, an imaging device for detecting the test beam and the reference beam, and a mirror disposed in a test beam path for reflecting the test beam toward the imaging device. The interferometer also includes a micromirror disposed in a reference beam path for reflecting a portion of the reference beam toward the imaging device and a piezoelectric translator operatively linked to the mirror and controlled by the wave front analyzer. The mirror is capable of moving relative to the path of the test beam. The micromirror has a lateral dimension not exceeding the approximate lateral dimension of a central lobe of the reference beam as focused thereon by focusing means so that when the test beam is reflected by the mirror and the portion of the reference beam is reflected by the micromirror, the reflected test beam and the reflected portion of the reference beam are both incident upon the imaging device forming an interference pattern including fringes which are converted into the fringe signal.

An apparatus is described for mounting an actuator lens within an optical disc carriage held by a baseplate assembly. The apparatus includes a frame, a cradle assembly mounted to the frame with at least one degree of freedom of motion, a tower assembly mounted to the frame, a lever assembly rotatably mounted to the frame, and a gripper assembly mounted to the lever assembly. The cradle assembly includes a baseplate alignment assembly having a source of radiant energy for projecting a beam of radiant energy, means for determining the tilt alignment of the beam with respect to the tower assembly, and a plurality of tilt actuators for aligning the tilt of the beam with respect to the tower assembly. The tower assembly includes a video camera having a camera lens, a tower magnifying lens, and a monitor for displaying a presentation of a beam of radiant energy passing through the tower magnifying lens and into the video camera. A method for mounting a lens is described which includes the steps of placing a lens in the carriage, aligning the lens by moving a baseplate assembly with respect to the tower assembly, moving the objective lens assembly with respect to the tower assembly, and moving the actuator lens with respect to the tower assembly. The lens is attached to the gripper assembly and the lever moves the gripper and lens away from the carriage. Adhesive is applied to the carriage and the lever is moved back so as to place the lens on the adhesive in the aligned position.

An apparatus is described for aligning an actuator lens of an optical disk drive or the like within a baseplate assembly. The apparatus comprises a frame, a cradle assembly mounted to the frame with at least one degree of freedom of motion, a tower assembly mounted to the frame, a lever assembly rotatably mounted to the frame, and a gripper assembly mounted to the lever assembly. The cradle assembly includes a baseplate alignment assembly comprising a source of radiant energy for projecting a beam of radiant energy, means for determining the tilt alignment of the beam with respect to the tower assembly, and a plurality of tilt actuators for aligning the tilt of the beam with respect to the tower assembly. The baseplate alignment may further comprise means for determining the lateral alignment of the beam with respect to the tower assembly and a plurality of lateral actuators for aligning the beam laterally with respect to the tower assembly. The tower assembly comprises a video camera having a camera lens, a tower magnifying lens, and a monitor for displaying a representation of a beam of radiant energy passing through the tower magnifying lens and into the video camera. The gripper assembly comprises an objective lens assembly, an objective lens mounted to the objective lens assembly, an objective lens alignment assembly for aligning the objective lens with respect to the tower assembly and the cradle assembly, and an actuator lens tilt assembly for aligning the actuator lens with respect to the tower assembly and the cradle assembly.

A method and apparatus for manufacturing information storage devices is described herein. Two embodiments of the invention are disclosed. In particular, the invention includes, but is not limited to, a bearing insertion device, a lens insertion device, a coarse coil gluing tool, a spring gluing tool, a device for gluing pole pieces, a pentaprism insertion and inspection tool, a constants and transfers test, an optics module alignment device, wedge, microprism and beamsplitter insertion devices, a read channel alignment test, a mass balance attachment invention, a position sensor alignment tool, an invention for the attachment of focus and radial coils, a quality control test for test an optical storage device prior to insertion of the objective lens, and a servo system test. The invention described herein is designed to manufacture information storage devices with increased quality and efficiency.

Method and apparatus for manufacturing information storage devices

An adjustable optical system for determining aberration in a source beam by comparison of a test beam with a reference beam. The system includes a test source for producing a source beam having a spacial intensity distribution including an aberration component, a wavefront analyzer for processing a fringe signal associated with the aberration component, and an interferometer interposed between the test source and wavefront analyzer. The interferometer includes a beamsplitter for splitting the source beam into a test beam and a reference beam, a mirror disposed in the test beam path, and a micromirror disposed in the reference beam path. The micromirror reflects a central portion of the reference beam toward an imaging device and allows an outer portion of the reference beam to pass thereby. The interferometer is also provided with an alignment image assembly for collecting and detecting the outer portion of the reference beam so that the micromirror and test source may be independently adjusted relative to the central and outer portions of the reference beam.
