An apparatus is provided for drawing glass ribbons from molten glass. The apparatus includes a drawing tank for holding the molten glass and a guiding body. The tank has a lower nozzle opening through which the molten glass can exit downwards. The nozzle opening has two nozzle slots defined between the guiding body and edges of the nozzle opening. The guiding body protrudes downward out of the nozzle opening. The guiding body is supported so as to be spaced apart from the edges with the guiding body suspended in a self-supporting manner at least along a central section of the nozzle opening.

Apparatus and method for producing glass ribbons

A method for the production of glass ribbon portions is provided that includes: transporting a glass ribbon at a velocity v, wherein the velocity vis dependent on the predetermined glass thickness (d), with the application of a tensile stress parallel to the edges of the glass ribbon, in a plane E, and cooling the glass ribbon at a cooling rate that is dependent on the predetermined glass thickness (d), inserting a score on the surface of the glass ribbon in at least one edge area by scoring the glass surface with a scoring tool, wherein the score has an angle a to the transport direction of the glass ribbon, deflecting the glass ribbon in a plane Eto generate a bending stress and separating a glass ribbon portion with the formation of edges by breaking the glass ribbon on the extension of the score running transversely to the glass ribbon.

Device and method for length cutting in ultrathin glasses

The present invention relates to glasses having a composition made up of base glasses. The glasses have a good chemical toughenability in combination with an advantageous coefficient of thermal expansion. Owing to their composition and the production process, the homogeneity of the properties of the glasses at their surface is high compared to the bulk glass. Furthermore, the fragility of the glasses is low, so that they can be processed to produce very thin glass articles.

Glasses having improved ion exchangeability and thermal expansion

An apparatus is provided for producing thin glass ribbons from molten glass. The apparatus includes a drawing tank, a direct heater, and an indirect heater. The drawing tank has a lower elongated nozzle opening through which the molten glass can exit downwards. The direct heater has one or more heating circuits operable to heat the drawing tank in a first heating zone. The direct heater has a power source for each on the heating circuits. Each heating circuit has connections to connected to a wall of the drawing tank so that current from the power source flows through at least a portion of the wall and heats the wall. Each heating circuit also includes current-carrying portions of the wall. The indirect heater has one or more heating elements to heat the drawing tank in a second heating zone.

A glass roll includes at least one glass film and one intermediate material one on top of the other in at least two layers onto a winding core. The glass film layers are held in place by the intermediate material layers. The glass roll is produced with a method including provision of a glass film, a winding core and a compressible intermediate material. At least one inside layer of the intermediate material is wound onto the winding core. The glass film and the intermediate material are wound onto the winding core in such a manner that the glass film is wound onto the winding core in alternating layers with the intermediate material. The intermediate material and/or the glass film is wound at a tensile stress acting in a longitudinal direction which causes a compression of the intermediate material and holds the glass film end in place on the glass roll.

Thin glasses having high refractive index (n), a layer composite assembly made from these thin glasses, a method for the production of the thin glasses, and the uses of the thin glasses are provided. The thin glasses are processed in an in line manufacturing process and have the optical properties of a classical optical glass. The thin glasses are highly transparent, crystallization-resistant, chemically resistant and highly refractive. The viscosity/temperature behavior of the thin glasses is adjusted to the manufacturing process via in line flat glass methods.

Highly refractive thin glasses

Titanium oxide containing borosilicate glasses, which have been produced without the use of arsenic and antimony compounds, are provided. An environmentally friendly refining method for providing titanium oxide containing borosilicate glass is also provided. The method includes using oxygen containing selenium compounds as refining agents to provide glasses with good transmittance values in the infrared range and show no disturbing discolorations. The glasses of the present disclosure are particularly suitable for the production of IR light conductors, cover glasses for photo sensors, and UV filters.

Arsenic and antimony free, titanium oxide containing borosilicate glass and methods for the production thereof

An apparatus for identifying defects within the volume of a transparent sheet, such as a glass sheet, is provided. The apparatus includes an illumination device that directs incident light onto at least a portion of a surface of the sheet so as to illuminate the sheet, and an image detector onto which the light backscattered from the sheet is directed to image the sheet. The apparatus generates at least two interference images under different capturing conditions in order to perform identification of defects by evaluating the at least two interference images.

A capacitor having a dielectric consisting of a glass layer with an alkali metal oxide content of at most 2 wt % and a thickness of at most 50 &#x3bc;m is provided. The capacitor includes at least two metal layers which are separated by the glass layer. The glass layer is preferably produced by a down-draw method or by an overflow down-draw fusion method.

The method of making thin glass panes includes conveying a glass melt through a vertical inlet to a drawing tank with a slit nozzle; drawing a glass ribbon downward from the slit nozzle; setting a total throughput by setting length and cross section of the inlet and by heating and cooling the inlet to control glass melt viscosity so that pressure in the inlet decreases; and setting a throughput per unit of length in a lateral direction along the glass ribbon via nozzle system geometry and by heating and cooling of the drawing tank and slit nozzle to control melt viscosity, so that glass does not wet an underside of the slit nozzle near a breaking edge. The setting of the total throughput and the throughput per unit length are largely decoupled to simplify process control. An inventive apparatus for performing the method is also disclosed.

Method and device for producing thin glass panes

To shorten the processing time in modern plants for cutting away pieces or sections from a continously moving endless material, e.g. a glass strip, one after the other by flying cutting the cutting bridge carrying the cutting device ( ) is accelerated until at a speed within a predetermined tolerance range of the feed speed of the continuously running endless material. Then the cutting bridge speed is synchronized for each piece or section to be cutaway and the cutting away of each piece or section takes place after the synchronization. To attain a very high precision cutting the spacing of the front cut edge formed when the previous piece or section is cut away from the cutting device is measured by means of an image-taking device ( ) prior to cutting away of the next piece or section. Then the measured spacing is compared with a set value for the spacing and the speed of the cutting bridge is synchronized or fine tuned according to the comparison prior to cutting away the next piece or section.

Described are substrates for magnetic media which have excellent surface properties as prepared directly from a slot drawdown glass sheet forming process. The substrate blanks cut directly from the glass sheet, as drawn, require little or no surface treatment for use as substrates for magnetic media, particularly hard disk drives. Also described are methods for preparing such substrates and methods for preparing magnetic media therefrom. Further described are the substrates and magnetic media prepared by such processes.

Methods of preparing glass substrates for magnetic media

A simple and economical method is described for compacting or shrinking flat glass panes. The method ensures high temperature homogeneity in the glass. First, the glass panes are cleaned and then a stack of glass panes to be treated is assembled without applying a release agent to any of the glass panes. Then the stack of glass panes is placed between ceramic panels made of silicon-infiltrated silicon carbide and this stack together with the ceramic panels is subjected to a heat treatment in a radiation furnace at temperatures ranging from 300&deg; C. to 900&deg; C. The ceramic panels have a thermal conductivity, which, in the region of the heat treatment temperature, is at least 5 times as large as that of the glass panes. The ratio of the total thickness of the ceramic panels to the height of the glass stack should be at least 1/&lgr;/40W/(mK), wherein &lgr; is the thermal conductivity of the ceramic panel at the temperatures of the heat treatment.
