A method is provided for producing a glass ceramic element with a patterned coating is provided. The method includes: providing a glass ceramic element with a coating which is at least partially light-blocking and preferably opaque in the visible spectral range; irradiating the glass ceramic element with a pulsed laser beam on the face provided with the coating so that the coating is removed by ablation; during irradiating the laser beam is directed over the surface of the glass ceramic element so that a portion of the coating is removed which has a greater lateral extent than the diameter of the laser beam; and once the coating has been removed, irradiating the glass ceramic with the laser in the region where the coating has been removed, thereby optically modifying the glass ceramic in the irradiated region.

Method for producing a glass ceramic element with patterned coating

A coated glass or glass ceramic article is provided that has a so-called 'dead front' effect, where display features or icons are not visible in the off state. In some embodiments, the glass or glass ceramic article includes a sheet-like glass or glass ceramic substrate having two opposite faces, where the substrate exhibits, in a visible spectral range from 380 nm to 780 nm, light transmittance &#x3c4;of at least 1% for visible light that passes through from one face to the opposite face. An opaque coating on one face that exhibits, in the visible spectral range from 380 nm to 780 nm, light transmittance &#x3c4;of not more than 5%. An opening is provided in the opaque coating. The opening allowing light that is incident on the surface of the opaque coating to pass through the coating and through the glass or glass ceramic substrate. The opening has a width of not more than 80 &#x3bc;m at the glass or glass ceramic substrate.

Coated glass or glass ceramic article

The method produces a coated three-dimensionally shaped glass ceramic body, especially a viewing window pane, which is provided with a reflective, anti-reflective or partially reflective layer. The method includes coating a flat green glass body to produce a coated green glass body and subsequently shaping the coated green glass body and ceramizing to form the coated three-dimensionally shaped glass ceramic body. In preferred embodiments the shaping the ceramizing occur at the same time. The reflective or anti-reflective coating is preferably applied to the green-glass body by an economical sol-gel process.
