A system herein includes one or more processors to determine asymmetric compensation measurements from at least one receiver antenna pair and at least one transmitter antenna pair on a tool body in an underground formation. The asymmetric compensation measurements are to be used with symmetric compensation measurements from the plurality of antenna pairs. The asymmetric compensation measurements are associated with signals from individual transmitter antennas that are at asymmetric or unequal distances from individual receiver antennas that receive a version of the signals. The individual receiver antennas are part of the at least one receiver antenna pair having symmetrically located receiver antennas with respect to a midpoint of the tool body and the individual transmitter antennas are part of the at least one transmitter antenna pair having symmetrically located transmitter antennas with respect to a midpoint of the tool body.

Downhole logging using symmetric and asymmetric compensated resistivity measurements

A method of estimating properties of a resource bearing formation includes receiving, by a processor, a measured echo train generated by a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurement device deployed in a region of interest, and a measured noise of the measured echo train, and calculating a Tdistribution subject to a nonlinear equality constraint, the nonlinear equality constraint dependent on the measured noise and a fitting error between the measured echo train and a modeled echo train. Calculating the Tdistribution includes estimating a solution for the Tdistribution that is closest to satisfying the nonlinear equality constraint.

Inversion of NMR echo trains using a supplementary nonlinear equality constraint

A method for generating a log of a value of a property of a fluid in an earth formation versus depth includes: obtaining a plurality of samples of drilling fluid that are entrained with a formation gas and correlating each sample to a depth in a borehole from which the formation gas was entrained in the drilling fluid; extracting the formation gas from each sample to provide a plurality of gas samples; analyzing each formation gas sample to provide a chemical composition of each formation gas sample in the plurality of formation gas samples; and determining a property value of the fluid in the earth formation versus depth using the chemical composition of each formation gas sample in the plurality of formation gas samples to provide the log.

Method for automatically generating a fluid property log derived from drilling fluid gas data

A method for generating a phase envelope log to characterize a subsurface formation includes drilling the borehole with a drill string, circulating a drilling fluid in the borehole, drawing a fluid sample representing a fluid contained in the subsurface formation, estimating a PVT parameter indicative of an in-situ condition of the subsurface formation from the drawn fluid sample, determining at least two phase envelopes at different depths using the estimated PVT parameter, and creating a phase envelope log formed of a continuous series of phase envelopes using the phase envelopes. A related system includes a drill string, a fluid sampling system, and a processor that estimates a PVT parameter indicative of an in-situ condition of the subsurface formation, determines at least two phase envelopes at different depths using the PVT parameter, and creates the phase envelope log.

Method for constructing a continuous PVT phase envelope log

A system for measuring a property of fluid in an earth formation includes a downhole tool disposed in a borehole and configured to be movable within the borehole and a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurement device including a transmitter configured to emit at least two pulse trains of magnetic energy into the earth formation and a detector configured to detect a long-TW echo train and a short-TW echo train resulting from the at least two pulse trains. The system also includes a processor configured to combine the information from the at least two pulse trains and a rate of penetration of the downhole tool to form a measurement of the property.

Formation evaluation utilizing dual wait time nuclear magnetic resonance

A method for processing nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurement data includes receiving, with a processor, NMR measurement data obtained from an NMR tool, the NMR measurement data having an echo train affected by a motion artifact, wherein the motion artifact is related to a magnetic field magnitude that varies in a volume of interest due to a motion of the NMR tool. The method further includes reducing, with the processor, an effect on the NMR measurement data of the motion artifact by using a correcting inversion method that models the motion artifact to provide a corrected transverse relaxation time constant (T2) distribution, the correcting inversion method having a multiplicative term having a term that includes at least one local maximum and an optional decay term.

T2 inversions with reduced motion artifacts

A nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) apparatus includes a transmitting assembly configured to emit one or more dual-wait-time pulse sequences, and a receiving assembly configured to detect a long-wait-time echo train and a short-wait-time echo train. The apparatus also includes a processor configured to perform at least one of: estimating a difference between the long-wait-time echo train and the short-wait-time echo train to generate a differential echo-train, inverting the differential echo-train into a differential Tdistribution, and detecting a motion artefact in response to determining that the differential echo-train includes a short-Tporosity fraction that is greater than a threshold value; and inverting two echo trains into two Tdistributions, calculating at least two porosity fractions for each of the two Tdistributions, estimating a shift of a porosity amount between the at least two porosity fractions, and detecting the motion artefact based on the shift.

Motion detection and correction of magnetic resonance data

A method for estimating a property of a subsurface material includes conveying a carrier through a borehole penetrating the subsurface material and performing an NMR measurement in a volume of interest in the subsurface material using an NMR tool having an antenna disposed at the carrier. The method further includes receiving with the antenna a short build-up signal due to a short magnetization build-up time of the NMR measurement, an echo-train signal with short polarization time due to the NMR measurement, and an echo-train signal with long polarization time due to the NMR measurement. The method further includes inverting, simultaneously, the short build-up signal, the short-polarization-time echo-train signal, and the long-polarization-time echo-train signal using a processor to estimate the property; and transmitting a signal comprising the property to a signal receiving device.

NMR T2 distribution from simultaneous T1 and T2 inversions for geologic applications

A method for processing nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurement data includes: receiving, with a processor, NMR measurement data obtained from an NMR tool, the NMR measurement data being affected by a motion artifact and having a first echo train obtained with a long polarization time TWand a second echo train obtained with a short polarization time TWthat is shorter than TW; and at least one of (i) reducing, with a processor, an effect on the NMR measurement data of the motion artifact using the first echo train and the second echo train and (ii) identifying, with a processor, the motion artifact using the first echo train and the second echo train; wherein the motion artifact is related to a magnetic field magnitude that varies in a volume of interest due to a motion of the NMR tool.

Method and apparatus for estimating a parameter of interest of an earth formation using a model based on NMR data, imaging data, and NMR tool response characteristics. The method may include constructing a model of the earth formation. The method may also include constructing a predictive model for estimating the parameter of interest. The apparatus may include an NMR tool and at least one processor configured to estimate the parameter of interest. The apparatus may also include an imaging tool configured to acquire the imaging data.

NMR data accuracy and resolution by formation modeling

NMR spin echo signals are acquired downhole. Principal Component Analysis is used to represent the signals by a weighted combination of the principal components and these weights are telemetered to the surface. At the surface, the NMR spin echo signals are recovered and inverted to give formation properties. Real-time displays may be used for determining formation properties and for altering the acquisition parameters.

Real-time NMR distribution while drilling

NMR spin echo signals are acquired downhole. An independent component analysis is used to determine parameters of a parametric model of the Tdistribution whose output matches the measurements. The model parameters are telemetered to the surface where the properties of the formation are reconstructed. NMR echo train compression using only NMR signal matrix multiplication to provide a lower transmission bit parametric representation from which estimate values of earth formation properties are obtained

A partial least squares (PLS) regression relates spin echo signals with samples having a known parameter such as bound water (BW), clay bound water (CBW), bound volume irreducible (BVI), porosity (PHI) and effective porosity (PHE). The regression defines a predictive model that is validated and can then be applied to spin echo signals of unknown samples to directly give an estimate of the parameter of interest. The unknown samples may include earth formations in which a NMR sensor assembly is conveyed in a borehole.

Rock properties prediction, categorization, and recognition from NMR echo-trains using linear and nonlinear regression

The quality factor of a NMR-antenna depends upon mud conductivity, formation resistivity and the borehole size. The Q of the antenna is measured. From measurement of one of formation conductivity or borehole size, the other can be determined.

Method and apparatus for formation evaluation and borehole size determination

NMR spin echo signals are corrected for axial motion of the borehole logging tool. An additional correction may be applied to correct for incomplete polarization of nuclear spins due to an insufficient wait time between pulse sequences.
