After immobilization of the crankshaft () and the camshaft () in a reference position in relation to each other and after detection of the reference position, the phase angle in relation to the reference position is measured and is controlled to a target value signal.

Further, the rotational angle of the crankshaft () of the internal combustion engine is determined and, using the rotational angle and a drive parameter of an epicyclic drive for the camshaft adjuster device, a coarse adjustment of the positional measurement signal can be carried out on determining a positional measurement error which cannot be eliminated by the fine correction.

If the measured speed value &#x3c9;(k) lies outside of the tolerance band, the measured speed value &#x3c9;(k) is replaced by a speed value &#x3c9;(k) that is within the tolerance band.
