A method and system of predicting behavior of a drill bit is disclosed, including generating a mathematical representation of a characteristic of at least one of a plurality of components of a drill bit, the plurality of components including at least one moveable cutter; at least one moveable rubbing element; and at least one moveable gage pad; simulating one or more operating conditions incident on the mathematical representation, and simulating an interaction between the plurality of components and an earth formation; and predicting physical responses of the mathematical representation to the one or more operating conditions.

Modeling and simulation of drill strings with adaptive systems

A drill bit includes a bit body; a pad associated with the bit body; and a rate control device coupled to the pad that extends from a bit surface at a first rate and retracts from an extended position to a retracted position at a second rate in response to external force applied onto the pad. The rate control device includes a piston for applying a force on the pad; a biasing member that applies a force on the piston to extend the pad at the first rate; a fluid chamber associated with the piston; and a pressure management device for controlling a fluid pressure within the fluid chamber.

Drill bit with self-adjusting pads

A drill bit includes a bit body; a pad associated with the bit body; a rate control device coupled to the pad that extends from a bit surface at a first rate and retracts from an extended position to a retracted position at a second rate in response to external force applied onto the pad. The rate control device includes a piston for applying a force on the pad; a biasing member that applies a force on the piston to extend the pad at the first rate; a fluid chamber associated with the piston; and a pressure management device for controlling a fluid pressure within the fluid chamber.

Disclosed is a formation testing tool for extracting formation fluid from an earth formation penetrated by a borehole having a drilling fluid. The tool includes: a sample flow element configured to extract formation fluid from the formation in a sample zone; a sample zone seal forming a perimeter defining the sample zone; a contamination removal flow element configured to extract formation fluid contaminated with the drilling fluid from a contamination removal zone in the formation; a contamination removal zone seal forming a perimeter defining the contamination removal zone, which surrounds and excludes the sample zone; and a controller configured to control a sample flow rate in the sample flow element and a contamination removal flow rate in the contamination flow removal element in order to decrease an amount of time required to acquire a sample of the formation fluid having an acceptable amount of contamination.

Optimization of sample cleanup during formation testing

A transducer includes a preload adapter having a sleeve portion and an end and a housing including a seating portion and a shaft portion that extends from the seating portion. The transducer also includes a piezoelectric element contained at least partially within a chamber that is at least partially defined by the sleeve portion and shaft portion and a diaphragm coupled to an external side of the end such that motion of the piezoelectric element causes motion of the diaphragm.

The sponge core barrel includes an outer barrel assembly, a core bit secured to a lower end thereof, and an inner barrel assembly disposed therein. The inner barrel assembly may comprise multiple, sponge-lined inner tube sections and may also include a near-bit swivel assembly. The sponge core barrel may include a piston assembly configured to be released by contact with a core sample without imparting high compressive forces to the core. The sponge core barrel may also include a pressure compensation mechanism and, optionally, a thermal compensation mechanism cooperatively configured to maintain the pressure of presaturation fluid. The sponge core barrel may also include a valve assembly enabling the make-up and presaturation of multiple, sections of inner tube to form a single, continuous chamber.

A core bit for cutting core samples in subterranean formations. The core bit has interior geometric features configured to control the quantity of drilling fluid, or flow split, flowing into a narrow annulus defined by an inside diameter of the core bit and an outside diameter of a core shoe. Reducing the flow split minimizes fluid invasion of a core being cut; thus, the core bit provides increased core quality and recoverability. The core bit is also adaptable for use with conventional core barrel assemblies and conventional coring techniques.

A highly accurate, fully compensated, high spatial resolution, wave propagation system for measuring dielectric constant and resistivity of fluids or solids in a cylindrical enclosure and method for measuring well core characteristics in-situ or in a laboratory. One embodiment of the invention relies on waves propagated from transmitters above and below two spaced receivers which transmit and receive electromagnetic waves via slots on the inner periphery of a cylinder structure. The data is then processed with a CPU either down hole for later retrieval or on the surface for real-time monitoring.
