A raster image processor and a convolutional neural network or other artificial intelligence module operate in parallel. Image data for printing is passed to the raster image processor and the convolutional neural network. The raster image processor translates computer vector files and/or rasterizes bitmaps having higher or lower resolution than the output device to a raster image that includes a matrix of dots a printer can process. The raster image processor generates layers for process inks. The convolutional neural network generates a mask layer, based on the image, that is used by the raster image processor to generate an additional layer for spot colors, object colors, or specialty ink. The mask layer transmitted to the raster image processor generates a spot color layer. The layers generated by the raster image processor and the additional layer for the spot colors and/or specialty inks are combined into a print data file.

A user defines the real costs for each of the individual inks used in printer and also defines a tolerance level for visual acceptance, defined in CIE units of DeltaE2000. Techniques are provided that include an algorithm and a computing device using such algorithm to compute a white ink separation channel from the CMYK or RGB data from a print pipeline as an input. In a method of monitoring a printing parameter of a printer, as well as a corresponding printing system, printing data are printed out, before being transmitted to a printer, by means of a further printer. The further printer is coupled to a sensor arrangement and monitored by means of a control unit, for determining desired values by using the printout produced by the further printer. By using this printout, a predetermined criterion is determined for a comparison of the printing parameter.
