Downhole drilling characteristic measurement systems for measuring a characteristic of drilling through the earth's subsurface and methods of the same are described. The systems include a downhole tool having an active measurement system, comprising a receiver, a first transmitter, and a second transmitter and a controller in communication with the first transmitter and the second transmitter, the controller configured to control the first transmitter and the second transmitter to transmit a first transmitted signal from the first transmitter and a second transmitted signal from the second transmitter. The receiver is arranged to receive a first received signal from the first transmitted signal and a second received signal from the second transmitted signal. A processor is configured to determine a characteristic of drilling from the first received signal and the second received signal.

Systems and methods for downhole determination of drilling characteristics

A downhole tool starts recording seismic energy. During the recording time, a surface seismic source is activated a specified number of times with a nominally defined separation between successive. The downhole sensor receives seismic waves resulting from the activation, but the time of the shooting sequence is not known downhole. The recorded data stream is processed and converted in real-time into seismic traces. A predefined number of traces are stacked and the quality of this sliding stack is used to detect time of the shooting sequence. The method could be used to detect one or several shooting sequences during a measurement window.

In some embodiments, one optical fiber includes a plurality of sensors, each of which can measure the same or different parameters. A multiplexer multiplexes optical signals to operate such sensor configurations. Optical fiber sensors for acoustic measurements can include a cylindrical member wrapped by one or more optical fibers. The sensors can be configured as needed to provide a 3D representation of the pressure measurements.

Fiber optic sensors in MWD Applications

Measurements are made continuously with a seismic while drilling (SWD) system and the measured data are stored in a working memory of a downhole processor along with quality control (QC) measurements. The QC data are analyzed and based on the analysis, portions of the data in working memory are recorded in permanent memory for retrieval. Alternatively, QC measurements are made substantially continuously predictions are made when data quality for SWD measurements are likely to be good. Recording of SWD data are then started based on the prediction.

Apparatus for making quality control measurements while drilling

A drilling system includes a control unit and a bottomhole assembly (BHA) coupled to a drill string. The control unit uses measurements from sensors distributed throughout the drill string and BHA to determine the physical condition of the drill string and BHA and to determine whether drilling can be optimized. The drill string sensors are housed in receiver subs and optionally can be positioned on extensible members. The receiver sub also can include a short-hop telemetry module, a processor module, and a clock module. In one embodiment, the receiver subs include seismic sensors for enabling vertical seismic profiling. During operation, the processor visually presents to the operator via one or more graphical user interfaces a dynamically updated pictorial image representing the drilling system. The image is annotated with an appropriate visual signal to indicate a determined physical condition at a given location or component. The processor can also display recommended adjustments to drilling parameters for increasing drilling rates, improving tool life, and more precise steering.

Enhanced noise cancellation in VSP type measurements

A procedure to determine VSP-WD (Vertical Seismic Profiling&#x2014;While Drilling) first breaks in absolute time is described. By combining a seismic surface source and firing complex seismic pattern unique in time (with a highly accurate surface&#x2014;downhole time reference system), an automatic downhole procedure for first break detection on the downhole data, even under harsh conditions (low signal to noise ratio), is established. VSP pattern recognition in absolute time

A controllable seismic source is used in a seismic-while-drilling system for obtaining VSP data. Coded information is sent downhole about the signal generated by said controllable source. The information about the seismic source is used for reconstructing the source waveform and processing the VSP data. Optionally, a reference signal measured at one depth of the BHA is used for processing of signals at subsequent depths.
