This specification relates to estimation of a location of a mobile device using one or more locator devices. In a first aspect, this specification describes an apparatus comprising: means for receiving, from a set of locator devices at known locations, each locator device comprising an antenna array, bearing measurements indicative of one or more bearings from the antenna array of each of the plurality of locator devices to a mobile device; means for estimating a position of the mobile device using the known location of each locator device and the bearing measurements from each locator device; means for determining, for each of the bearing measurements, an error based on the bearing measurement and the estimated position of the mobile device; means for identifying one or more bearing measurements having an error in excess of a threshold; and means for re-estimating the position of the mobile device such that the contribution of the identified one or more bearing measurements to the re-estimated position is reduced.

Positioning system and method

This specification relates to estimation of a location of a mobile device using one or more locator devices. This specification describes an apparatus comprising: means for receiving, from one or more locator devices, each locator device comprising an antenna array, information indicative of a bearing from the antenna array of each of the one or more locator devices to a mobile device; means for determining parameters of a Kent distribution for each of the one or more locator devices based on the received information and predetermined characteristics of the antenna array; and means for determining an estimated position of the mobile device by performing an optimisation process on an objective function that is dependent on the Kent distribution parameters for each of the one or more locator devices.

Location estimation

Inter-alia, a method is disclosed comprising: obtaining, for at least one reference position, an estimate of a representative direction from a node of a communication network to the at least one reference position based on information indicative of at least one directional measurement, the directional measurement being indicative at least of a propagation direction of a signal communicated between the at least one reference position and the node of the communication network; obtaining, for the at least one reference position, a weighted estimate of the representative direction based on at least an angular weighting function for the at least one reference position, the angular weighting function being representative at least of an aperture of at least one antenna of the node of the communication network; and obtaining information indicative at least of an orientation and/or position of the node of the communication network at least based on the weighted estimate of the representative direction obtained for the at least one reference position.

Positioning system deployment

In one example embodiment, a method includes obtaining sets of input data and an objective, the sets of input data including values of wireless network communication parameters, generating sets of output data for the sets of input data in accordance with the objective, generating a mapping of the sets of input data to the sets of output data and training a network controller using the mapping.

Methods and systems for network self-optimization using deep learning

A method of allocating orthogonal resources, a computer program for so doing, a network node and network control node are disclosed. One method comprises determining user equipment within a radio cell of the network node that are considered to be edge user equipment located towards an edge of the radio cell and user equipment that are considered to be centre user equipment located towards a centre of the radio cell. Allocating a subset of the set of resources to the edge user equipment and allocating resources from the set of resources that are not allocated to the edge user equipment to the centre user equipment; and indicating to at least some adjacent network nodes that the subset of the resources is not available to the adjacent network node for allocation to edge user equipment.

Allocation of orthogonal resources to user equipment

Aspects and embodiments provide a method of allocating frame resource elements in a wireless communication network for the purpose of channel estimation, and a base station and computer program product operable to perform that method. One aspect provides a method of allocating resource elements in a wireless communication network. The method comprises: determining a channel estimate associated with each user equipment to be scheduled in a given frame; assessing whether a validity time associated with each channel estimation value, e.g. CSI, associated to each user equipment is still valid or should be considered as expired; and allocating the frame resource elements to either channel estimation, when the current channel estimation is not anymore valid, or else to data transmission, when it is still valid. The validity time comprises a number of frames and is selected according to an associated mobility of the user equipment, wherein for semi-static UEs the current channel estimation is considered to be valid for a longer time. Aspects and embodiments provide a method for an adaptive and user-centric frame design in massive MIMO that takes into account mobility of UEs and thus may mitigate waste of resource associated with use for unnecessary channel estimation purposes.

Resource element allocation

A method is provided of receiving user data from multiple transmitters, the user data from each transmitter having been encoded as a Low Density Lattice codeword, and the multiple Low Density Lattice codewords having been transmitted so as to be received as a combined signal at a receiver, the method of receiving comprising the steps of: (i) receiving the signal, (ii) calculating coefficients of linear combinations of the codewords from the multiple transmitters, (iii) calculating a scaling factor to be applied to the signal based on the coefficients, (iv) applying the scaling factor to the signal to provide a linear combination of the codewords, (v) decoding the linear combination of the codewords based on channel state information to obtain an optimal independent linear combination of user data, (vi) repeating steps (ii), (iii) (iv) and (v) to obtain at least as many optimal independent linear combinations as the number of transmitters, and recovering the user data from the optimal independent linear combinations.

Receiver, a plurality of transmitters, a method of receiving user data from multiple transmitters, and a method of transmitting user data

A method, in a heterogeneous telecommunications network, for mitigating uplink-downlink (UL-DL) interference between a first half-duplex user equipment (UE) operable to communicate using a first frequency resource in an uplink to a first full-duplex node, and a second half duplex UE operable to receive downlink communications from a second full-duplex node, the method including receiving, at the second node, an indication of actual or potential UL-DL interference generated by the first UE, scheduling a pair of UEs, that includes the second UE, for full-duplex UL-DL communication with the second full-duplex node in which DL transmissions to the second UE from the second node use a second frequency resource different from the first frequency resource or in which scheduling is avoided for DL connections to the second UE that fall below a quality of service threshold determined using channel quality measurements obtained by the second UE for the first and second frequency resources.

Mitigating UL-to-DL interference

A receiver node is operable to receive rateless encoded data packets from a transmitter node. The receiver node includes estimation logic operable to estimate a transiting number of rateless encoded data packets transiting between the receiver node and the transmitter node; determining logic operable to determine an acknowledgement number of received rateless encoded data packets, the acknowledgement number of received rateless encoded data packets including a difference between a decoding number of rateless encoded data packets estimated to be required from a batch of rateless encoded data packets to decode the rateless encoded data packets from the batch and the transiting number of rateless encoded data packets; and acknowledgement logic operable to transmit an acknowledgement to the transmitter node to cause the transmitter node to cease transmission of rateless encoded data packets from the batch of rateless encoded data packets when a received number of received rateless encoded data packets from the batch of rateless encoded data packets achieves the acknowledgement number of received rateless encoded data packets.

Rateless encoding

A method of providing a region of radio coverage within a wireless telecommunication network and a wireless telecommunication base station operable to provide that region of radio coverage. The base station comprises: transmission apparatus operable to provide a first region of radio coverage on a first radio frequency and a second region of radio coverage on a second radio frequency. The first region of radio coverage comprises a plurality of angularly spaced primary first radio beams and at least one secondary first radio beam. The base station is arranged to transmit the secondary first radio beam at a vertical tilt angle which differs from a tilt angle associated with the plurality of primary first radio beams. The second region of radio coverage comprises at least a primary second radio beam; that primary second radio beam is arranged to radiate from the base station between adjacent angularly spaced primary first radio beams. Aspects recognize that by providing two cells on a carrier, one vertically offset with respect to another, and horizontally offsetting a cell on a second carrier it may be possible to improve overall network performance.

Radio cells

A proxy node includes reception logic operable to receive data from a first node for transmission to a second node over a communications link; determination logic operable to determine a selected proxy node from a group of proxy nodes, the selected proxy node being one of the group of proxy nodes where a difference in a communications link characteristic of a communications link between the proxy node, the selected proxy node and the second node and a communications link characteristic of a communications link between the proxy node and the second node falls within a threshold amount; and transmission logic operable to establish a rateless coded communications link for transfer of the data with the selected proxy node.

Proxy node and method

Methods and network nodes of a wireless telecommunications system are disclosed. One method of controlling transmissions with a base station of a wireless telecommunications system comprises the steps of: determining a set of neighboring base stations, each base station in the set of neighboring base stations utilizing an identical carrier and scrambling code to support transmissions with that base station; and allocating base stations in the set of neighboring base stations different spreading codes for transmissions with those base stations. By allocating each base station in the set of base stations sharing the same carrier and scrambling code different spreading codes, interference in transmissions between the base stations can be controlled.

Network nodes and methods

In certain embodiments, a macrocell base station (BS), such as an LSAS BS, estimates its backhaul channels with a small-cell BS (e.g., a relay or repeater) by averaging multiple instances of a received pilot signal repeatedly transmitted by the small-cell BS. Since the macrocell and small-cell BSs are stationary, averaging the received pilot signal transmissions over time results in the zero-temporal-mean time-dependent component of each backhaul channel as well as zero-temporal-mean noise and interference signals from other wireless nodes to substantially cancel out, enabling the macrocell BS to relatively infrequently estimate a relatively time-invariant, dominant component for each backhaul channel. The macrocell BS uses the estimated dominant components to generate user-data-based downlink transmissions to the small-cell BS. In this way, the processing to estimate channel state information (CSI) data for the backhaul channels is greatly reduced compared to conventional techniques.

Channel estimation techniques for LSAS backhaul and the like

A small cell base station, a method, a computer program product and a wireless telecommunications network are disclosed. The small cell base station is deployable in a wireless telecommunications network in which a macro base station provides a first region of radio coverage using a first frequency band and a second region of radio coverage using a second frequency band, the first region of radio coverage comprising a plurality of angularly spaced first radio beams, the second region of radio coverage comprising at least a second radio beam, the second radio beam being arranged to radiate from the macro base station between adjacent angularly spaced first radio beams, the small cell base station comprising: transmission logic operable to provide a third region of radio coverage using a small cell frequency band, the small cell frequency band comprising one of the first frequency band and the second frequency band; reception logic operable to measure a signal quality of transmissions received from macro base stations using the first frequency band and the second frequency band and to identify as an excluded frequency band that one of the first frequency band and the second frequency band which has a highest signal quality; and transmission frequency band selection logic operable to select as the small cell frequency band that frequency band other than the excluded frequency band. Through this approach both the macro base stations and the small cell base station can share frequency bands. By excluding the highest signal quality frequency band from the set and excluding that high-quality frequency band from being used by the small cell base station, the overall performance of the wireless telecommunications network is improved.

A femto cell device comprises: a receiver for receiving transmissions from a user terminal in an active call with a macro cellular network node; an analyzer for determining a radio frequency (RF) signature characterizing the transmissions received from the user terminal; an authorizer arranged to use the RF signature to determine if the user terminal is authorized to use the femto cell device; and a communicator for informing the core network that the femto cell device is a valid candidate handover target for the user terminal when the user terminal is determined by the authorizer to be authorized to use the femto cell device.
