A process for the production and for the winding of one polyester yarn, preferably multi-filament yarn, which comprises at least about 85 weight %, in relation to the total weight of the polyester yarn, of polytrimethylene terephthalate (PTT) wherein said process is characterized in that filaments of said polyester yarn is heat-treated, before it is wound on a bobbin, at a temperature in the range of about 70&#xb0; C. to about 180&#xb0; C. The method of accomplishing this is by heating the godets that are used in the spinning part of the process, preferably the last pair of godets, to relax the yarns so that the yarn package will not shrink significantly during storage and/or transportation. It is thus possible to obtain at least one PTT yarn package with long-term stability during storage and which is insensitive against elevated temperatures during storage and transport.

Poly(trimethylene terephthalate) is formed into a bulk continuous filament yarn by melt-spinning poly(trimethylene terephthalate) at a temperature of 240 to 280.degree. C. to produce a plurality of spun filaments, cooling the spun filaments, converging the spun filaments into a yarn, drawing the yarn at a first draw ratio of 1.01 to about 2 in a first drawing stage defined by at least one feed roller and at least one first draw roller wherein at least one feed roller is operated at less than 100.degree. C., subsequently drawing the yarn at a second draw ratio of at least about 2.2 times that of the first draw ratio in the second drawing stage defined by at least one first draw roller and at least one second draw roller, wherein at least one second draw roller is heated to a temperature greater than that of the first draw roller and within the range of 100 to 200.degree. C., and texturing the drawn yarn and cooling the textured filaments.

The invention described herein provides a process for recycling a mixed polymer recycle stream containing polyester polymers, particularly polyethylene terephthalate (PET) typically in the form of carbonated soft drink or other containers. This novel process includes the steps of: (1) contacting the mixed polymer recycle stream with a solvent which selectively dissolves the PET. (2) separating the selective solvent containing PET from the residual mixed polymer, (3) cooling the selective solvent to precipitate the PET, and (4) removing the selective solvent from the precipitated PET. It is preferable that the mixed polymer recycle stream be prepared for recycling by conventional steps, such as water washing. In a preferred embodiment, the mixed polymer recycle stream is chemically washed subsequent to water washing and prior to contact with the selective solvent. The PET recovered is preferably combined with 'virgin' PET and further processed to increase its molecular weight.
