A black and white stretching system and method for improving contrast of a picture is disclosed. The system includes a histogram distribution calculation unit for calculating a histogram distribution of an input signal of a specified unit, a mean calculation unit for calculating a mean level of the input image signal, a slope calculation unit for calculating black and white stretching slopes in association with the mean level, a ratio calculation unit for calculating a ratio of a picture change based on the histogram distribution of the present input image signal and the previous input image signal, a filtering unit for adjusting the black and white stretching slopes corresponding to the ratio of the picture change, and a stretching unit for stretching the input image signal by mapping the adjusted black and white stretching slopes and the input image signal.

An apparatus for and a method of adaptively processing video signals based on noise states. The method includes, a memory device that stores a look-up table in which optimal filter tap coefficients corresponding to a number of noise levels are registered; a noise measurement unit that obtains a noise measurement from input video signals during a predetermined period; a filter coefficient determination unit that selects optimal filter tap coefficients from the memory based on the noise measurement obtained by the noise measurement unit; a noise suppression filter that employs the optimal filter tap coefficients selected by the filter coefficient determination unit to filter and remove noise from the input video signals; and a video signal processor that performs video signal processing on the result output by the noise suppression filter.

A method and apparatus for removing false contours in a pulse number modulation (PNM) digital display device having a plasma display panel (PDP). The method involves a) comparing the input data with the comparison data and calculating a plurality of possible output data in consideration of an index error between the input data and error-diffused input data so that the false contours can be removed, the error-diffused input data being obtained by diffusing a quantization error that has occurred in pixels adjacent to the input data in the current frame; b) detecting an index error between the input data and the error-diffused input data; and c) selecting one from among the plurality of possible output data obtained in step a) in consideration of the index error detected in step b).
