A piston head for an internal combustion engine is provided containing a polished nickel plated layer formed in the piston top and an anodized layer formed on at least the lower part of the uppermost piston ring groove in order to reduce the adverse affects of excessive thermal conditions on the member.

Piston for internal combustion engine

An engine controller is linked to and controls simultaneously both an exhaust control valve and an on-off valves or changeover valves or a reflector in the exhaust pipe to improve engine performance. The controller positions the exhaust control valve and on-off valves or changeover valves, or reflector based upon detected engine speed and throttle position.

Engine control device

An exhaust timing control system for two-cycle engines includes a pivotally mounted valve body on which the timing control surface is formed on a ridge-defining element positioned at the free end of a plate having reduced thickness for weight reduction purposes. The valve body is protected against thermal stresses by reception in a recess of conforming shape located in the upper surface of the exhaust passage. The component parts of the system may be provided with various structural configurations to enhance the system's operational efficiency.

Exhaust timing control apparatus

An apparatus for controlling the exhaust timing of a two-cycle engine. A control valve is provided for adjusting the position of the top of the control port in the two-cycle engine as a function of the engine speed. A central processing unit receives a signal from an engine speed detector indicating the engine's operating speed. Based upon a control map, the central processing unit initiates action to adjust the position of the control valve.

Exhaust timing control device for two-cycle engines

An exhaust timing control apparatus for two-cycle engines of the type having one or more exhaust ports extending outwardly from the cylinder. A valve body is pivotally mounted within the exhaust passage in a recess specifically provided therefore. The valve has a control surface approaching the cylinder to define an apparent upper timing edge of the exhaust port. Holes are provided through the valve body for flow to operate to inhibit the build up of carbon deposits which often inhibit the operation of the valve. An inclined surface may be formed on the surface of the valve body to facilitate the removal of carbon. Edges may also be provided on the valve body which cooperate with the walls of the recess in the exhaust passage to knock off carbon build up such that it might be conveyed through the exhaust pipe and from the system.

An exhaust apparatus for controlling the timing of exhaust operation in two-cycle engines including a pivotally mounted plate positioned in a recess in the upper surface of an exhaust passage. The plate includes a shaft bearing portion above the pivot axis of substantial strength. A plate extending from that bearing portion is reduced in thickness with a upwardly extending ridge at the outer end thereof to define a control surface and sealing mechanism for the plate. The cooperation between the exhaust port and the end of the valve body may be arranged for maximum sealing and maximum wall thickness of the surrounding port.

A tiltable tricycle comprises a body frame, a single front wheel steerably supported on a front portion of the body frame, a power unit mounted on a rear portion of the body frame and including at least an engine, a joint case connected to the power unit for vertical angular movement, a rear axle support case connected to the joint case for lateral rolling movement, a rear axle assembly rotatably supported on the rear axle support case, a pair of rear wheels coupled to the rear axle assembly, respectively, and a shock absorber disposed between the body frame and the joint case.

Tiltable tricycle

A two-cycle engine includes a port timing control device for varying a timing of the opening of an exhaust port by a piston. The port timing control means includes a first valve mounted within an exhaust passage adjacent to an upper end of the exhaust port and having a port timing control surface, a second valve mounted on a cylinder block between a cylinder head and the first valve and having a closure surface, and an urging member acting on the second valve to always urge it against the first valve. The first valve is operable to be angularly moved about an axis generally perpendicular to the axis of a cylinder into and out of an extended position where the control surface is disposed slightly below the upper end of the exhaust port to close a part of the exhaust port. The second valve is movable along a generally straight path into and out of an extended position where the closure surface closes that portion of the exhaust port lying between the upper end of the exhaust port and the first valve. The second valve is movable in synchronism with the angular movement of the first valve through the urging member.

Two-cycle engine

A device for cooling both a belt casing of an engine and the engine itself, in which both the inside and the outside of the belt casing are cooled by exterior air which is sucked in by respective fans. The air which cools the outside of the belt casing also is used to cool the rest of the engine, and then exits the engine at a side opposite the side at which the air first was sucked in. As a result, air flow through the engine does not impede rotation of the fans and hence does not hamper the cooling process.

Device for cooling engine power unit

An exhaust system for a vehicle is made sufficiently long and yet allows the muffler to be located relatively close to the engine by curving the exhaust pipe about a cooling fan provided for the engine. The arrangement also facilitates mounting of the exhaust system to the engine and vehicle bodies at a fewer number of support points.

Engine exhaust system and supporting apparatus for two-wheeled/three

A power unit suspension system wherein a vehicle frame and a front lower portion of a power unit are connected with each other through a link rotatable about its front and rear pivots. An elastic body is provided between the link and the power unit. Rotational loads due to the power unit weight and rear cushion reaction acting on the link from the power unit side are elastically supported and converted into a moment of rotation.

Power unit suspension system for motorcycles

A drive unit mounting structure for a three-wheeled vehicle which has a rear fork pivotably connected to a vehicle body and supporting thereon a drive unit. In order to suppress hopping movements of the vehicle, front and rear portions of the drive unit are pivotably mounted by front and rear link members on the rear fork. The front link member has a longitudinal axis extending obliquely, when viewed in side elevation, toward a point where a pair of rear wheels drivably coupled to the drive unit contacts the ground. The front and rear link members include rubber mounts for dampening vibrations of the drive unit in operation.

Drive unit mounting structure

An improved form of three-wheeled vehicle of the type having a front wheel arranged in the longitudinal plane of symmetry of the vehicle and a pair of rear wheels arranged symmetrically with respect to the vehicle plane. The pivot joint interconnecting the front and rear frames of the vehicle has a turning axis offset from the vehicle plane to that side of the vehicle on which the driving rear wheel is arranged and extending in a direction inclined laterally outwardly from rear to front of the vehicle. Such pivot arrangement is highly effective to improve the driving stability of three-wheeled vehicles of the type concerned, without involving any structural complication or increase in cost of production.

Unilateral rear-drive type three-wheeled vehicle

A shock absorber has expansion and compression damping characteristics readily adjustable, if required, to different extents. In one preferred form, it includes an adjustable orifice associated with a piston, and the orifice includes an annular flexible valve element and a valve-seat member engageable with the inner peripheral edge thereof. The valve-seat member is formed at the bottom with feet which are arranged opposite to a stepped or continuously inclined annular top surface portion of the piston and is axially movable for engagement with the latter. The amount of axial movement of the valve-seat member and hence that of deflection of the valve element is adjustable by rotation of the valve-seat member relative to the piston through provision therefor at the top of the cylinder. In an alternative form, the shock absorber has an expansion and a compression damping mechanism separately incorporated therein, including an externally adjustable valve mechanism arranged in the bottom of the cylinder in addition to the one associated with the piston. In this instance, the cylinder is received in a tubular casing for rotation relative thereto.

Shock absorber for vehicle use

A hydraulic shock absorber of the type having a cylinder and a piston with axial passages therethrough. The piston is mounted to slide within the cylinder. Valve plates having orifices therethrough are provided to control flow through the axial passages of the piston. Certain of the valve plates are situated to operate together with a variable effective orifice on the downstream side of the axial passages and to act with a fixed effective orifice as check valve plates when the flow is reversed. The composite valve thus defined offers a smooth and properly sloping velocity-resistance curve. The shock absorber also includes a foot valve assembly controlling flow between the interior of the cylinder and an annular oil reservoir outside the cylinder. The foot valve assembly may have two check valves for controlling flow through two sets of foot valve passages or it may employ a check valve spring which changes from a 'V' shape to a flat shape to cover orifices in a check valve plate.
