The number of pixels of image data recorded in a recording medium is determined, and it is determined whether or not an image to be looked at will be of good quality according to the determined number of the pixels and the number of pixels required for an apparatus that will print or display the image. An image list on a print image selecting picture has frames of colors according to the determination result. The user can easily select image files with resolutions suitable for the print size even if the user does not have a special knowledge of a quality, pixels and a resolution of photo image data.

In an apparatus for capturing the image of a user, transforming the image and then printing the transformed image, the user is notified of the manner in which the image will be transformed before the image is printed. To accomplish this, the transformed image of the user is displayed on a monitor display unit before it is printed. Thus the user can verify how the transformed image will look before it is printed. According to another aspect of the invention, when a captured image is transformed and displayed, the user is allowed to set the method of transformation and the degree thereof. Image capture apparatus and method

A processing apparatus performs a pre-shooting to beforehand photograph a camera subject for a light metering through controlling a camera. Image data representative of a pre-shot image of the object formed through the pre-shooting is subjected to a reduction processing by a camera control, and then transmitted to the processing apparatus. The pre-shot image is displayed on a predetermined area of a display unit. Area information representative of a photometric domain in the pre-shot image and a photometric method is determined in accordance with operational information of which the processing apparatus is formed by an input device. An exposure value is calculated from image data representative of the pre-shot image on the basis of the determined area information. Exposure information representative of a shutter speed and a stop corresponding to the calculated exposure value is formed. The image of the object is again photographed by the camera on the basis of the formed exposure information and the control of the processing apparatus.

Apparatus and method for automatic focusing in a camera system

The time required for transmission of image data from an electronic camera to a host computer is shortened. Image data representing the image of a subject imaged in the electronic camera is stored in an image memory. When a preview-image command is applied to the electronic camera from the host computer, the image data that has been stored in the image memory is reduced to 1/8 by eliminating pixels in a thinning-out circuit. The reduced-image data is transmitted to the host computer, where the data is displayed on a display unit as a preview image. A desired area and magnification (resolution) are designated on the preview image and then a get command is applied, whereupon main image data in the designated area and having the designated magnification is transmitted from the electronic camera to the host computer.
