A battery case excellent in glossiness of appearance and working efficiency and a surface-plated steel plate which can be used preferably to manufacture the battery case. The battery case is produced by deep-drawing, DI-forming, DTR-forming a surface-treated steel plate having glossy nickel or glossy nickel-cobalt alloy plating on the outermost layer corresponding to the external face of a battery case of a plated original plate consisting of a steel plate. The glossy nickel plating or glossy nickel-cobalt alloy plating layer on the outermost layer has a high glossiness, and therefore the appearance is excellent. The runnability of a formed battery case is high as well as the working efficiency.

A battery container having an inner surface provided with a nickel-phosphorous alloy layer, optionally provided with a nickel-cobalt alloy layer as the lower layer thereof. A purpose of the present invention is to provide a surface treated steel sheet for a battery container having an excellent anti-alkaline characteristic and a performance for maintaining a discharging level for a long time, a battery container and a product method thereof. In the present invention, after forming a nickel-bismuth alloy layer on a steel sheet, the steel sheet is thermally treated at 300&deg; C. to 650&deg; C. in an inactive gas or a deoxidizing gas for 240 to 600 min so that an iron-nickel diffused layer and nickel-bismuth diffused layer are formed at each boundary surface. A battery is produced by utilizing a battery container made of a steel sheet on which one or more than layers selected from a group of an iron-nickel diffused layer, a nickel layer, a nickel-bismuth diffused layer, an iron-nickel-bismuth alloy layer is formed on the steel sheet.

A battery container is manufactured by forming, by the DI or DTR forming method, a surface-treated steel sheet obtained by plating the external and internal surfaces of an original steel sheet with a nickel-cobalt alloy. The nickel-cobalt alloy coating the punching load in a cupping process, because the powdering property is remarkably reduced. Therefore, the scratching of a die and a punch caused by metallic contact is suppressed and the service lives of the die and the punch are prolonged, thus providing improved continuous productivity of the battery case which has a good stripping property in the DI or DTR forming operations.

A battery case which has a high quality and is suitable for continuous forming and a surface-treated steel sheet which can be used suitably for manufacturing the battery case. The battery case is manufactured by forming, by the DI or DTR forming method, a surface-treated steel sheet obtained by plating the external and internal surfaces of an original steel sheet with a nickel-cobalt alloy. The nickel-cobalt alloy plated to both surfaces of the battery case can reduce the punching load in a cupping process, because the powdering property can be reduced remarkably. Therefore, the scratching of a die and a punch caused by metallic contact can be suppressed and the service lives of the die and the punch are prolonged, and then, the continuous productivity of the battery case can be improved. In addition, the case has a good lubricant retaining property, the removing property (stripping property) of the battery case which is an important factor for the DI or DTR formability can be improved.

A steel sheet for a battery container is covered with nickel-tin alloy layer on one side to be the inner side of the battery container which is formed by drawing the steel sheet. A battery using the steel sheet is manufactured by firstly filling positive electrode mix consisting of manganese oxide, graphite and potassium hydroxide and secondly filling negative electrode active material consisting of zinc and potassium hydroxide in the battery container.
