A recording medium includes an ink-receiving layer formed by applying a coating liquid onto at least one surface of a substrate and drying the coating liquid, the coating liquid containing hydrated alumina and a binder, in which the hydrated alumina in the coating liquid has an average particle size of 100 nm to 250 nm, the surface of the ink-receiving layer has an arithmetic average roughness Ra of 0.8 &#x3bc;m to 2.5 &#x3bc;m, the arithmetic average roughness Ra being specified by JIS B0601:2001, and the surface of the ink-receiving layer has a specular gloss at 60&#xb0; of 10.0% or less, the specular gloss at 60&#xb0; being specified by JIS Z8741.

Recording medium

The invention provides a recording medium capable of inhibiting conspicuousness of scratches attached to the recording medium and preventing the occurrence of density unevenness in an image. The recording medium has a substrate and an ink receiving layer provided on the substrate, wherein substrate is a resin-coated substrate obtained by coating a base material with a resin, and wherein Ra2 is 0.3 &#x3bc;m or more and 2.5 &#x3bc;m or less and Ra1&#x2212;Ra2 is 2.0 &#x3bc;m or more, where Ra1 is an arithmetic average roughness of a surface of the substrate son the side of the ink receiving layer as prescribed by JIS B 0601:2001 and Ra2 is an arithmetic average roughness of the outermost surface of the recording medium as prescribed by JIS B 0601:2001.

A recording medium includes a substrate and two or more ink receiving layers on each of a first surface and a second surface of the substrate. The ink receiving layers each contain a pigment and a binder. The invention provides a recording medium capable of inhibiting cracks and also inhibiting peeling off of an ink receiving layer upon folding of the recording medium. The recording medium has a substrate and an ink receiving layer provided on the substrate, wherein the substrate is a resin-coated substrate obtained by coating a base material with a resin, the arithmetic average roughness Ra of a surface of the substrate on the side of the ink receiving layer as prescribed by JIS B 0601:2001 is 3.0 &#x3bc;m or more, the skewness Rsk of a roughness curve of the surface of the substrate as prescribed by JIS B 0601:2001 is 0.2 or less, and the coating thickness of the ink receiving layer is 50 &#x3bc;m or less.

The invention provides a recording medium capable of inhibiting occurrence of undertrapping, lowering the visibility of scratches on the outermost surface of the recording medium and inhibiting occurrence of a mottled pattern when recording is conducted. The recording medium has a substrate and an ink receiving layer provided on the substrate, wherein the arithmetic average roughness Ra of the outermost surface of the recording medium as prescribed by JIS B 0601:2001 is 1.1 &#x3bc;m or more and 2.5 &#x3bc;m or less, and the skewness Rsk of a roughness curve of the outermost surface of the recording medium as prescribed by JIS B 0601:2001 is 0.1 or less.

A recording medium comprising a substrate and at least two porous ink receiving layers provided thereon of which a lower layer, second distant from the substrate, is arranged on the substrate side of an upper layer, most distant from the substrate. Pore distribution curves of the upper and lower layers respectively have one peak and two peaks. An ink jet recording medium having a gas-permeable substrate, and an ink receiving layer and a surface layer provided in that order on the gas-permeable substrate, wherein the surface layer is formed through the steps of (1) applying a coating liquid comprising a first inorganic pigment and a binder onto the ink receiving layer, and (2) applying a coagulating liquid comprising a coagulant and a second inorganic pigment having a refractive index higher by 0.30 or more than that of the above first inorganic pigment and an average particle size of 100 nm or less onto the applied coating liquid to subject the coating liquid to a coagulating treatment followed by pressing a coating layer including the coating liquid and the coagulating liquid against a heated casting drum while the coating layer is in a wet condition to subject the coating layer to a cast treatment.

A mat type recording medium for ink jet printing is provided which exhibits optimum printability no matter which of dye ink and pigment ink may be used in printing.
