A boat propelling system capable of determining an abnormality regarding steering of a propelling system main body includes an outboard engine main body, a steering section arranged to steer the outboard engine main body, a steering angle sensor arranged to detect a steering angle of the steering section, a pivot sensor arranged to detect an actual pivot angle of the outboard engine main body, and an ECU. The ECU calculates a target pivot angle change amount based on a target pivot angle derived from the steering angle and a baseline target pivot angle, calculates an actual pivot angle change amount based on the actual pivot angle and a baseline actual pivot angle, and obtains a gap amount between the target pivot angle change amount and the actual pivot angle change amount. Then, the ECU determines an abnormality regarding steering of the outboard engine main body based on a result of comparison between the gap amount and the first threshold value. Setting of the baseline target pivot angle and the baseline actual pivot angle is based on a result of a comparison between the gap amount and a second threshold value.

Provided are a sulfated C-glycoside which is a novel compound serving as a precursor of chafuroside and chafuroside analogs; a method for efficiently producing the sulfated C-glycoside; and a method for efficiently producing chafuroside and chafuroside analogs using said sulfated C-glycoside. A sulfated C-glycoside represented by general formula (A1) or (B1) [wherein R, Rand Rindependently represent each a hydrogen atom or an OH group] is obtained by extracting tea leaves or tea tannins with water, a lower alcohol solvent having 1 to 3 carbon atoms or a liquid mixture comprising the same. Alternatively, the sulfated C-glycoside is produced by reacting a flavone C-glycoside such as isovitexin or vitexin with a sulfate group-introducing agent to thereby sulfate the flavone C-glycoside. By heating the sulfated C-glycoside thus obtained, chafuroside and chafuroside analogs are efficiently produced.

A cowling assembly for an outboard motor includes an improved construction that can supply relatively cool air containing little water to the induction device and can also supply air to cool engine components without reducing the charging efficiency. The outboard motor has an engine that includes an air induction device and is enclosed within the cowling. The cowling assembly defines a closed cavity in which the engine is contained and has an air intake system. An air intake duct structure introduces air into the cavity. The intake duct structure includes a plurality of relatively narrow connection passages and has an expansion chamber portion disposed on the downstream side of the passages. Intake noise is reduced by this construction. In one preferred form, the cowling assembly additionally has a second intake system. One or more connection passages communicate with the first air intake system and the second air intake system.

An improved cowling arrangement for an outboard motor powered by an internal combustion engine. The improved arrangement includes a flywheel cover and cowling that incorporate upwardly and downwardly extending ribs which are positioned along an air path between the air vent of the outboard motor and the throttle body of the motor. These ribs act as labyrinth-type seals which prevent water entering the air vent from contacting the throttle body. Also disclosed is an improved cowling arrangement that prevents water pooled on the flywheel cover from draining onto the throttle body when the motor is tilted, such as when the watercraft banks into a turn.

A cowling assembly for an outboard motor includes an improved construction that can supply relatively cool air containing little if no water to the induction device and that can also supply air to cool engine components without reducing the charging efficiency. The outboard motor has an engine that includes an air induction device and is enclosed by the cowling. The induction device has an air inlet opening. The cowling assembly defines a closed cavity in which the engine is contained and has an air intake duct that introduces air into the cavity. The intake duct adjoins the inlet opening and has an opening opened to the cavity and positioned lower than a lower end of the inlet opening. In one form, the cowling assembly has at least one front air intake opening formed on a side surface of its front portion. A rear air intake opening is also formed on a rear surface of its rear end portion. The cowling front air opening primarily supplies air to the induction system, while the cowling rear air opening primarily supplies a cooling air flow across the engine.

A cowling structure for a marine propulsion engine is disclosed which effectively prevents water from entering the air intake opening, while at the same time maintains optimum engine performance. The cowling structure has an engine cowl which encloses the engine and which defines an air intake opening. An air duct molding is associated with the engine cowl such that it extends over the air intake opening and, in conjunction with the engine cowl, defines an air inlet facing toward a rear portion of the cowling structure. A wall extends between the engine cowl and the air duct molding and is located between the air intake opening and the air inlet. Sidewalls, which are spaced apart a distance less than the width of the wall, direct any water entering the air inlet towards the wall to effectively prevent the water from entering the air intake opening.

A locking device for connecting and disconnecting the top portion and tray of a cowling of an outboard motor. A locking mechanism comprising a pair of guide members each having a bore, one affixed to the top cowling and the other affixed to the cowling tray such that the guide member bores are adjacent to and aligned with one another when the top cowling is fitted onto the tray. A movable member is slidably supported within the top cowling guide member bore and has an outer portion that is biased outward by a spring for engagement with the tray guide member bore. An inner wire slidably supported within an outer sheath interconnects the movable member with a release lever that is rotatably supported on the upper surface of the top cowling. Upward movement of the lever causes the movable member to retract into the top cowling guide member bore against the force of the spring and disengage with the tray guide member bore so that the top cowling may be unlocked and detached from the tray.
