Grease which includes a base oil containing at least 50% by mass of a specific diester compound of a glycol with a branched carboxylic acid, and a specific diurea compound as a thickener. The grease is excellent in low-temperature performance and has low oil separation tendency. In particular, when used in a rotation transmission device having a built-in one-way clutch, the grease can provide satisfactory clutch engagement performance (intermeshing) at low temperatures and is less apt to cause oil separation under high centrifugal force.

The present invention provides a lubricating oil composition for a compression type refrigerator, containing a base oil having a kinematic viscosity of 2 to 1,000 mm/s at 40&#xb0; C. The base oil contains the following compounds (1) to (6) each having a molecular weight of 150 to 5,000 and a tertiary or quaternary carbon: (1) an alicyclic hydrocarbon, (2) a branched carboxylic acid ester of a polyhydric alcohol, (3) an alicyclic polycarboxylic acid ester, (4) polybutene, (5) an alkyl benzene and/or an alkyl naphthalene, and (6) a paraffinic mineral oil showing aC-NMR spectrum in which an area of peaks at chemical shifts in the range of 30 to 100 ppm accounts for 5 to 40% of the entire peak area and/or a naphthenic mineral oil having a naphthene content of 30 to 70% by mass. The composition has excellent traction performance, lubricating properties and stability.

There is provided lubricants for power transmission which exhibit not only a high coefficient of traction but also a high flash point. The lubricants for power transmission according to the present invention contains an alicyclic alcohol carboxylic diester compound represented by the general formula (1):R&#x2014;CO&#x2014;O&#x2014;(X)&#x2014;Z&#x2014;(X)&#x2014;O&#x2014;CO&#x2014;R&#x2003;&#x2003;(1)wherein Z is a cycloalkylene group having 3 to 12 carbon atoms; Rand Rare each independently a chain hydrocarbon group having 3 to 20 carbon atoms; Xand Xare each independently a linear or branched alkylene group having 1 to 5 carbon atoms; and m and n are respectively an integer of 0 or 1.

Lubricants for power transmission

Disclosed is a lubricant base oil composition that comprises (a) from 80 to 98% by mass of a naphthenic synthetic lubricant base oil having a flash point of not lower than 140&#xb0; C. and (b) from 2 to 20% by mass of an alcohol/fatty acid ester having a flash point of not lower than 150&#xb0; C. of which the alcohol has a gem-type dimethyl structure, or comprises (a) from 85 to 99% by mass of a naphthenic synthetic lubricant base oil having a flash point of not lower than 140&#xb0; C. and (c) from 1 to 15% by mass of a mineral oil having a kinematic viscosity at 40&#xb0; C. of from 0.9 to 9.6 mm/sec, a boiling point under normal pressure of from 150 to 400&#xb0; C. and a % CA measured through ring analysis (in n-d-M process) of at most 10%. The lubricant base oil composition has a flash point of not lower than 150&#xb0; C. and has a high traction coefficient at high temperatures, and its low-temperature flowability characteristic is good. The oil composition is favorable for traction drive fluid.

Derivatives of bicyclo&lsqb;2.2.1&rsqb;heptane in the invention have a high traction coefficient under high temperature and an excellent viscosity characteristic under low temperature and are useful for the fluid for a traction drive, and a method in the invention produces such derivatives economically and efficiently.

There is disclosed a traction drive fluid which comprises a base oil blended with (A) an active phosphate ester base compound, (B) a boron-containing imide base dispersant (e.g. polyalkenyl succinimide treated with a boron compound) and (C) a boron-free imide base dispersant (e.g. polyalkenyl succinimide) in such blending amounts that the phosphorus content derived from the component (A) and the boron content derived from the component (B) are each 100 to 600 ppm, preferably 60 to 300 ppm by weight, and at least 60 ppm by weight, respectively based on the base oil, and the boron-free imide base dispersant (C) is blended so that the ratio by weight of the nitrogen in the component(C) to the boron in the component (B) is at least 1, preferably 1 to 6. The traction drive fluid has excellent wear resistance and excellent scoring resistance of a steel material element, is capable of suppressing surface damage such as peeling of a friction material and in particular, is well suited for use as a lubricating oil for a traction drive continuous variable transmission used in an automobile.

A lubricating oil composition is herein disclosed which comprises as the main compounds, (A) a base oil comprising a mineral oil or a synthetic oil; (B) a hindered phenol compound represented by the general formula (I) or (II) ##STR1## wherein m is an integer of 1 to 5; (C) an alkylated diphenylamine compound; and (D) a borated succinic acid imide compound. This lubricating oil composition is excellent in heat resistance and oxidation stability in a gaseous phase of the oil, and it stably functions for a long time as a traction drive oil or the like.

A lubricating oil composition comprising a major amount of at least one lubricating base oil, from 0.05 to 5% by weight of at least one zinc dithiophosphate, and from 0.01 to 10% by weight of at least one unsaturated aliphatic alcohol of from 16 to 24 carbon atoms, the weight ratio of the unsaturated aliphatic alcohol to the zinc dithiophosphate being from 0.1 to 10, has excellent thermostability and oxidation stability and has an excellent effect in improving load carrying capacity and wear resistance.

Disclosed herein is an additive for lubricating oil which comprises a zinc dithiophosphate, a compound having at least one hydroxyl group and carbon-carbon double bond in a molecule thereof and cuprous oxide. A process for improving the coefficient of traction at high temperatures in a traction drive, and a tranction drive fluid for use therein. This traction drive fluid comprises the hydrogenated product of a dimer, a trimer or a tetramer of norbornanes and/or norbornenes, and exhibits excellent traction performance over a wide temperature range from low temperature to high temperature.

The invention provides a novel compound 1,1-dicyclohexyl cycloalkane derivative represented by the general formula ##STR1## in which R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are each a hydrogen atom or lower alkyl group, R.sup.3 to R.sup.6 are each a hydrogen atom, lower alkyl group or alkylene group forming a ring structure together with either one of the others and the carbon atom in the cycloalkane ring, and m and n are each zero or a positive integer not exceeding 6 with the proviso that m+n is 4-6, such as 1,1-dicyclohexyl cyclohexane. The compound has a relatively low viscosity and high traction coefficient even at elevated temperatures so that it is useful as a constituent of a traction-drive fluid usable in a compact and light-weight traction-drive apparatus. The compound can be synthesized by subjecting a corresponding 1,1-di(hydroxyphenyl) cycloalkane compound to a hydrogenation reaction and dehydration reaction in combination in the simultaneous presence of a hydrogenation catalyst and a dehydration catalyst.
