A method for the prophylaxis and treatment of diseases induced by acceleration of secretion of cytokines (e.g. TNF-.alpha., IL-1, IL-6, IL-8, and IFN-.gamma.) which comprises administering a benzoheterocyclic compound of the formula: ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are lower alkyl and X.sup.1 is halogen, R.sup.3 is lower alkyl, R.sup.4 is hydroxy, and X.sup.2 is halogen, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof.

Method for inhibiting cytokine secretion

The invention presents a biguanide derivative or its salt expressed by a formula: ##STR1## (where R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are as defined in Specification), or formula: ##STR2## (where A and R.sup.3 is as defined in specification). This biguanide derivative or its salt is preferably used as the effective amount of a disinfectant for humans, animals, medical appliances, etc.
