A pressure ring includes a first pressure ring fitted in a first ring groove of a piston; and a second pressure ring fitted in a second ring groove of the piston, and positioned between the first pressure ring and an oil ring. The second pressure ring is provided with a groove that extends across a surface of the second pressure ring from an inner peripheral side to an outer peripheral side. The groove is configured such that at least one of a width and a depth of the groove becomes larger toward the outer peripheral side from the inner peripheral side.

An internal combustion engine exhaust gas system includes a filter arranged in an exhaust passage of the internal combustion engine, a fuel adding valve which is arranged upstream of the filter and supplies fuel into the exhaust passage, and a low-pressure exhaust gas recirculation apparatus that removes some of the exhaust gas from downstream of the filter as EGR gas. An EGR rate is controlled taking into account the amount of fuel supplied by the fuel adding valve such that an oxygen concentration of intake gas, which is drawn into a cylinder of the internal combustion engine in a state in which the EGR gas that is introduced by the low-pressure exhaust gas recirculation apparatus is mixed with air introduced into an intake passage, is constant before and after fuel is supplied by the fuel adding valve.

An object of the present invention is to control the discharge amount of unburned fuel components in the internal combustion engine. According the present invention, the number of times of execution of sub fuel injection is changed based on the operation range within which the operation state of the internal combustion engine falls so that the lower the engine load of the internal combustion engine is, and the lower the number of engine revolutions of the internal combustion engine is, the more the number of times of execution of sub fuel injection is increased. Furthermore, the lower the atmospheric pressure is, the lower the temperature of the cooling water of the internal combustion engine is, or the lower the temperature of the intake air of the internal combustion engine is, the more an operation range in which the number of times of execution of sub fuel injection is large is expanded to higher loads and higher revolutions.

An exhaust emission control apparatus for an internal combustion engine is capable of suppressing a nasty smell due to the hydrogen sulfide generated upon recovery from SOx poisoning. A variable-nozzle type turbo charger capable of temporarily decreasing the back pressure of the engine at the start of the engine. The turbo charger is equipped with a plurality of nozzle vanes of which the opening degree can be changed and are capable of changing the areas of turbine nozzles at the time when exhaust gases of an engine are guided from said turbine nozzles formed among said nozzle vanes to a turbine rotor, wherein an actuator that adjusts the opening degree of the nozzle vanes is so controlled that the areas of the turbine nozzles are larger than a minimum area for a predetermined period of time from the start of the engine, and, after the passage of said predetermined period of time, said actuator is so controlled that the areas of said turbine nozzles become the minimum area to promote the warming-up of the engine when the water temperature of the engine or the engine load is smaller than a predetermined value.

A multi-cylinder internal combustion engine having a plurality of cylinders, each comprising a combustion chamber and an accumulation chamber which are interconnected to each other via an accumulation valve. The opening operation of the accumulation valve is controlled so that the accumulation valve remains opened during the compression stroke. In the first half of the compression stroke, a jet of the combustible mixture is spouted out into the combustion chamber from the accumulation chamber to create a strong swirl motion in the combustion chamber. Disclosed is an internal combustion engine comprising a combustion chamber and an accumulation chamber which are interconnected to each other via a valve. The opening operation of the valve is controlled so that the valve remains opened during the compression stroke. In the first half of the compression stroke, a jet of the combustible mixture is spouted out into the combustion chamber from the accumulation chamber to create a strong swirl motion in the combustion chamber.
