An alkaline battery separator including 25 to 62% by mass of an alkali-resistance synthetic fiber, 5 to 25% by mass of a fibrillated organic solvent-spun cellulose fiber having a Canadian standard freeness value of 10 to 280 ml, and 33 to 50% by mass of a mercerized pulp having a Canadian standard freeness value of not less than 550 ml, wherein the fibrillated organic solvent-spun cellulose fiber intertwines with the mercerized pulp.

A separator for alkaline batteries which is obtained by bonding 5.0 to 45.0 g/mof a highly hygroscopic macromolecular compound of the crosslinking type having carboxyl group to a wetlaid nonwoven fabric comprising an alkali-resistant fiber, followed by crosslinking the macromolecular compound, wherein a silicate compound is added to the highly hygroscopic macromolecular compound of the crosslinking type in an amount of 1.0&#xd7;10to 10 mg/cmper unit area of the separator. By adding the silicate compound, absorption of the electrolyte is increased, the electrolyte can be held for a long time, the electric resistance of the separator itself can be kept small, growth of dendrite can be suppressed, short circuit due to the formed dendrite can be prevented, the volume of the negative electrode material can be increased by suppressing the thickness of the separator after absorbing the electrolyte, impact of dropping can be endured, and oxidative degradation in the alkaline dry cells can be suppressed. An alkaline primary battery can be constructed using the separator.

The heat-embossed, fastening non-woven fabric of the present invention comprises, as at least one component, core-sheath or side-by-side heat-fusing composite staple fibers having a low-melting polymer component on a fiber surface, wherein a front surface of the non-woven fabric comprises a non-embossed portion and an embossed portion, the non-embossed portion being a large number of regularly or irregularly dispersed convex island regions upwardly projecting from the front surface, the embossed portion being a sea region surrounding each island region, and at least one end of the composite staple fibers in the non-embossed portion that constitute the convex island regions being press- and heat-anchored at the embossed portion that constitute the sea region. The non-woven fabric of the present invention is thin and flexible, and can be used as a cost-effective loop fastener member suitable for disposable products. In addition, the non-woven fabric of the present invention maintains its high strength because the fibers constituting the loop engaging elements are prevented from being pulled out even if the loop fastener member is subjected to a tensile force from the hook engaging elements.
