A display device includes a non light-emitting type display element for controlling the transmission of incident light to display an image, a light radiating unit having a light source and a photoconductor, and arranged at the back of the display element for emitting illuminating light toward the display element and reflecting ambient light incident from the front of the display element at a given reflectivity toward the display element. An illumination brightness controller is provided for controlling the intensity of the illuminating light so that the screen brightness of the display element comprising the total of reflected light of the ambient light reflected on the photoconductor and transmitted light of the illuminating light is set up into a predetermined range according to the reflectivity of the photoconductor and the environmental illumination of the ambient light radiated from the front of the display element.

A two-dimensional photosensor is formed on a surface light source, and a transparent conductive layer made of ITO or the like is formed on the two-dimensional photosensor. The transparent conductive layer dissipates static electricity and is grounded. Even if a finger in contact with the transparent conductive layer on the two-dimensional photosensor is charged with static electricity, this static electricity can dissipate via the transparent conductive layer. When the transparent conductive layer is divided into two layers, and the finger simultaneously touches the two transparent conductive layers, a fingerprint reading start signal is obtained. Even if, therefore, the finger is charged with static electricity, the two-dimensional photosensor can be prevented from malfunction or damage by the static electricity. When a target object in contact between the transparent conductive layers is a copy having a different resistance value, reading is not performed, and the reliability can improve.

One frame of a video signal is separated to a plurality of display frames. To display a color specified by the video signal by mixing display colors of a plurality of display frames, the video signal is converted to data indicative of a voltage to be applied to each pixel over the display frames by using a conversion table. A voltage corresponding to the converted data is applied to a birifringence control type liquid crystal display device to drive the liquid crystal display device multiple times in one frame period of the video signal. When the response speed of the liquid crystal is fast, a color obtained by mixing the display colors of a plurality of display frames is recognized by an observer. When the response speed of the liquid crystal is slow, a color corresponding to an average value of the voltages applied to a plurality of display frames is recognized by the observer. When the liquid crystal has an intermediate response speed, a color obtained by visually mixing a series of display colors displayed during the transition of the alignment state of the liquid crystal is recognized by the observer.

A liquid crystal display device, for displaying pure white, has a first substrate having first electrodes formed thereon; a second substrate positioned to face the first substrate and having second electrodes formed thereon; a liquid crystal sealed between the first and second substrates; and first and second polarization plates arranged to sandwich the first and second substrates and having such polarization characteristics that when the first and second polarization plates are placed one on the other in such a way as to have substantially perpendicular transmission axes, a value acquired by dividing a transmittance of light with a wavelength of 500 nm by a transmittance of light with a wavelength of 440 nm becomes substantially smaller than 0.4. The first and second polarization plates have optical characteristics such that when the first and second polarization plates are placed one on the other in such a way as to have substantially parallel transmission axes, a value acquired by subtracting a transmittance of light with a wavelength of 640 nm from a transmittance of light with a wavelength of 460 nm is greater than -3%.

Electric field adjusting layers each of which is different from an aligning film in at least one of a resistivity and a dielectric constant are formed in each pixel on a pixel electrode of a first substrate. An electric field applied to a liquid crystal partially changes in each pixel, and regions which are different from each other in aligned state are formed in each pixel. Therefore, a field angle is widened. A value .DELTA.n.d of the liquid crystal is preferably set to be 600 nm or more.

A liquid crystal shutter comprising a light source, a liquid crystal element including a pair of substrates and liquid crystal interposed between the substrates, a pair of polarizing plates formed on the outer surfaces of the substrates, and a heater for heating the liquid crystal element. An ON electric field for turning on (allowing light transmission) a liquid crystal optical device and an OFF electric field for turning off (shielding light) the liquid crystal optical device are selectively applied to a liquid crystal material of the liquid crystal optical device. The ON electric field is applied so as to obliquely align liquid crystal molecules with respect to substrates constituting the liquid crystal optical device, thereby obtaining an ON state. The ON electric field has an electric field for driving the liquid crystal molecules and a non-electric field for generating a state wherein no electric field is applied to the liquid crystal molecules. The OFF electric field has an electric field for homeotropically aligning the liquid crystal molecules with respect to the substrates.
