In a system where a first storage system and a second storage system are connected to a third storage system, when the first storage system virtualizes and provides a device in the third storage system as a device in its own storage system, update data stored in a cache in the first storage system is written into the device of the third storage system to be reflected, attributes of the device are transferred to the second storage system, and the second storage system virtualizes the device of the third storage system as a device of its own storage system.

The present invention provides a storage control device which enables the time between failures to prolong as much as possible, though it uses HDD's whose mean time between failures is relatively short. The storage control device controls spindle motors in a manner that a spindle motor is rotated regarding the HDD of data which can access from a host computer and a spindle motor is stopped regarding the HDD of data which are clearly judged that a host computer does not access the data. Whether the host computers can access the HDD or not is judged by the fact that whether the memory region (internal logical volume) provided by the HDD is in mapped to the host logical volume or not which is recognized by the host computer and is able to access thereby.

The storage system of the present invention has a simple configuration and ensures redundancy of the system. The primary storage control device and the first secondary storage control device are connected by a synchronous read method, and the primary storage control device and the second secondary storage control device are connected by an asynchronous read method. The primary storage control device sets a management number in the update data and saves a journal data. The primary storage control device associates the management number with the update data and transmits them to the first secondary storage control device. The first secondary storage control device writes the update data to the first secondary volume, associates the management number with the storage destination address of the update data and stores them in the maintenance table. If the primary storage control device stops, the first secondary storage control device becomes anew a primary storage control device. The present invention provides a technique for, in the case in which a failure has occurred in a shared memory, controlling a period of a pseudo through operation to reduce a period in which performance of a disk array device falls. Control information is divided into management information, which is required to be duplexed, and directory information, which is only required to simplexed, and the management information and the directory information are stored in separate shared memories. In the case in which a failure has occurred in the shared memory of an expanded memory unit (Option) storing the directory information, the directory information is reestablished in the shared memory of a basic memory unit (Basic). The pseudo through operation is cancelled at the point when the directory information is reestablished. After a package of the expanded memory unit is replaced with a normal product, the directory information is reestablished again. Management information managed in the other cluster is copied to the shared memory of the basis memory unit to complete maintenance and recovery work.
