A packing tool for packing large articles such as image forming apparatuses has a pallet to place the article, and an article-fixing member to secure the article to the pallet. The article-fixing member is accommodated in an accommodating section in the pallet. When securing the article to the pallet, the article-fixing member is pulled out and wound around the article.

An image forming apparatus having a ventilating device that can effectively cool heated components and remove ozone produced in the apparatus. The image forming apparatus includes a writing device. Upper and lower ducts are provided to the writing device having a housing of the writing device therebetween to form an outside-air flowing path on and beneath the writing device. Outside-air intaken by an air intake fan flows through the upper and lower ducts separately. In the writing device, scanning optical components, such as an f&thgr; lens, and a mirror formed of a plastic are disposed.

In an image forming apparatus including a cooling device that efficiently cools an inside of a main body of the image forming apparatus, the cooling device has an airflow path in which air taken in the main body of the image forming apparatus flows through a drum-shaped image carrier from a first end side of the image carrier, flows through the image carrier, and is discharged from a second end side of the image carrier, then makes a U-turn on the second end side of the image carrier, and flows through space between a toner storing device and a fixing device, and returns to a position on the first end side of the image carrier in the main body of the image forming apparatus. A fan may be provided at a position where the air makes a U-turn in the airflow path.

The apparatus comprises a single fixing roller equipped with a heater, and two pressing rollers pressed to the fixing roller. An improvement in the structure for connecting various optional units to the body of a printer, copier or like recording apparatus and to each other. The optional units include a mass feed unit for feeding a large amount of paper sheets, a stack unit for stacking paper sheets discharged, and a re-feed unit for conditioning copies for re-feed. The optional units are accurately matched to each other and to the apparatus body when they are connected to the latter, without resorting to changes in the configuration of paper transport paths. Any of the units which has an outlet opening is provided with a device for changing the direction of transport of an outgoing paper sheet.
