Provided is a mineral base oil satisfying the following requirements (I) to (III): The foregoing mineral base oil can become a lubricating oil composition having desirable low-temperature viscosity characteristics, including low-temperature fuel consumption and low-temperature engine start-up performance, and also having excellent high-temperature piston detergency.

Provided is a mineral base oil having a kinematic viscosity at 40&#xb0; C. of 4.0 mm/s or more and less than 6.0 mm/s, a kinematic viscosity at 100&#xb0; C. of 1.0 mm/s or more and less than 2.0 mm/s, and a flash point of 140&#xb0; C. or higher. A lubricating oil composition containing the mineral base oil has a high flash point while having a low viscosity and thus having excellent fuel-saving performance when used as a driving system oil and the like.

A process oil which satisfies the requirements of (a) a content of a polycyclic aromatic compound of less than 3% by weight, (b) a content of an aromatic hydrocarbon of 18% by weight or more, (c) a content of a polar compound ranging from 11 to 25% by weight, (d) a kinematic viscosity at 100&deg; C. ranging from 10 to 70 mm /s, and (e) a flash point of 210&deg; C. or more.

Process oil which satisfies requirements that a content of a polycyclic aromatic compound is less than 3% by weight, a content of an aromatic hydrocarbon is 18% by weight or more, a content of a polar compound is between 11 and 25% by weight, a kinematic viscosity at 100&deg; C. is between 10 and 70 mm /s, and a flash point is 210&deg; C. or more.
