Initially, an operating condition of the hybrid electric automobile is detected, and a required output of the electric motor is obtained based on the operating condition, and electric power corresponding to the required output is supplied to the motor. Meanwhile, an actual output generated by the motor is detected, while a required minimum output value to be generated by the motor is determined. Power generation by the generator is controlled based on the actual output and the required minimum output value.
