An image forming apparatus performs a direct printing function. A selecting section selects at least two files from a plurality of files stored in at least one of an internal storage medium and an external storage medium. A human interface receives passwords form a user. A password determining section determines whether the selected files are protected by passwords. A file extracting section extracts the selected files from an internal storage medium or external storage medium. A password verifying section determines whether passwords contained in the selected files and the passwords inputted through the human interface coincide. A printer prints the selected files. A printing controller controls the printer, causing the printer to print at least one of selected files if the password verifying section has determined that the password contained in the at least one selected file and the password inputted by the user coincide.

Image processing apparatus that facilitates printing of password-protected documents, and corresponding method for forming images

A printing system includes an image forming apparatus and a host terminal apparatus. The image forming apparatus is operated by a first user who picks up a printed output of the image forming apparatus. A second user sends print data from the host terminal apparatus. The image forming apparatus includes an input section, a receiving buffer, and a watermark embedding section. The first user inputs a first item of information indicative of the first user through the input section. The receiving buffer stores the print data therein. The watermark embedding section produces a watermark pattern in which information representative of the first item of information is embedded, and combines the print data with the watermark pattern. The image forming apparatus prints out the received print data with the watermark pattern embedded therein. The watermark pattern includes the first item of information therein.

A printing system includes a host terminal apparatus (e.g., personal computer) and an image forming apparatus (e.g., printer). The personal computer transmits print data to the printer. The printer is connected to the host terminal apparatus over a network, the printer being capable of embedding a watermark pattern into the print data received from the host terminal apparatus. The watermark pattern contains an item of information that identifies a user who actually picks up a printed output of said image forming apparatus. The watermark pattern contains information that identifies a user who activates printing of the print data. The printer includes a user identifying section that identifies a user who actually picks up the printed output.

An image forming device includes a data receiving unit for receiving printing data and first identification information through a network; a data storage unit for storing the printing data and the first identification information; a non-contact medium information obtaining unit for obtaining second identification information stored in a memory of a non-contact medium; a print control unit for controlling a printing process of forming an image according to the printing data; a information comparison unit for comparing the first identification information with the second identification information; and a data control unit for retrieving the printing data corresponding to the first identification information from the data storage unit and sending the printing data to the print control unit when the information comparison unit determines that the first identification information matches to the second identification information.
