A resin composition is provided which comprises from 50 to 95% by weight of a modified ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer (C) obtained by reacting an ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer (A) with a monovalent epoxy compound (B) having a molecular weight of 500 or less, and from 5 to 50% by weight of a soft resin (F) that has at least one functional group able to react with a hydroxyl group and has a Young's modulus at 23&#xb0; C., 50% RH of 500 MPa or less, wherein the soft resin (F) is dispersed with an average particle diameter of 0.1 &#x3bc;m or less in a matrix of the modified ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer (C). This resin composition is excellent in barrier properties and also in flex resistance and impact resistance at low temperature.

A method for producing an ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer resin composition, wherein an ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer resin is contacted with an aqueous solution containing both carbon dioxide gas and at least one additive selected from the group consisting of an alkali metal salt (A) and a boron compound (B). The present invention can provide an environmentally friendly method for producing an EVOH resin composition, the method releasing no carboxylic acid such as acetic acid to the ambient atmosphere. In addition, the invention can provide an EVOH resin composition which emits less smell and is superior also in long-run workability.

Ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer resin compositions and process for production thereof

Disclosed are a resin composition comprising an ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer and a multi-layered structure comprising the resin composition. The resin composition comprises an ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer which contains from 500 to 2000 ppm, in terms of the metal, of an alkali metal salt (A) and from 0.05 to 4.5 &mgr;mols/g of a carboxylic acid (B), where the ratio of the content (&mgr;mol/g) of a carboxylic acid (b1) having a molecular weight of at least 75 and its salt to the total content (&mgr;mol/g) of the carboxylic acid (B) and its salt is at least 0.1; or comprises an ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer which contains from 500 to 2000 ppm, in terms of the metal, of an alkali metal salt (A), from 10 to 500 ppm of a carboxylic acid (b2) having a molecular weight of smaller than 75, and from 10 to 500 ppm, in terms of the phosphate radical, of a phosphate compound (C). The resin composition has extremely good adhesiveness, and its moldings have good appearances with few gels and fish eyes. When molded, the resin composition ensures good long-run workability and recyclability, and the recycled resin composition is yellowed little.
