A shift control apparatus controls the shifting of a transmission by selecting one power transmitting path at a time from a plurality of paths respectively having different speed reduction ratios. At least one power transmitting path is provided with a one-way clutch and an engine-brake clutch is included in the plurality of paths. The one-way clutch can be locked by the engine-brake clutch. An engine-brake clutch control valve is provided for controlling the engine-brake clutch. Two solenoid valves are provided for controlling the engine brake clutch control valve. When one of the two solenoid valves fails and is inactivated, the other solenoid valve is used to cause the engine-brake clutch control valve to engage the engine-brake clutch.

Transmission with one-way clutches and failsafe method of and apparatus

A vehicle transmission of the type having a main shaft and a parallel counter shaft with a plurality of selectable gear trains therebetween. The axis of the engine crankshaft is disposed perpendicular to intermediate portions of the main shaft and the counter shaft, with the low speed gear trains and high speed gear trains positioned on opposite lateral sides of the crankshaft. This results not only in a reduced size of the transmission in the axial direction of the crankshaft but also in a reduced lateral size of the transmission, as compared with a transmission in which the crankshaft is connected in series to the transmission main shaft. A synchro mechanism is mounted on the counter shaft and a shift drum for operating the synchro mechanism is positioned parallel to the counter shaft. This insures a space for disposition of the synchro mechanism between gears of the relatively large diameter gears on the counter shaft and ensures a smooth shifting operation, without an increase in the lateral size of the transmission due to the shift drum.

An automotive transmission includes an input shaft coupled to a torque converter or a clutch, an output shaft disposed parallel to the input shaft for driving a differential and transmission gear trains disposed between the input and output shafts. The first and second countershafts are disposed between the input and output shafts with an auxiliary transmission gear train connecting the input shaft and the first countershaft. The first and second countershafts are connected by normally meshing gears. A main transmission gear train with multiple gear ratios connects the second countershaft to the output shaft. A portion of the main transmission gear train is positioned adjacent the torque converter or the clutch to produce a compact arrangement.

Automotive transmission apparatus

An automotive transmission has a plurality of transmission gear trains and clutching means (such as synchromesh mechanisms, hydraulic clutches, or the like) which are disposed between first and second shafts for selecting gear positions, and includes a first gear fixed to an input shaft, a second gear disposed on the second shaft and meshing with the first gear, a third gear rotatably mounted on a third shaft and rotatable with the second gear, and clutching means for connecting or disconnecting the third gear and the third shaft. The axial dimension of the transmission of the invention is rendered shorter than the axial dimension of the conventional transmission.

The average value of the parameter which is measured in a prescribed time interval is determined, and a control value for the amount of engagement in a next prescribed time interval is determined based on the differnece between the average value and the predetermined reference range value.

The fluid pressure normally causing coupling of the clutch is interrupted by a blocking device when a change in drive trains occurs resulting in a lower fluid pressure on one of the drive train operating clutches, and that interruption is prolonged by delaying either the imposition of the high fluid pressure on the blocking device in one embodiment or the imposition of the fluid pressure on the clutch in another embodiment.

An hydraulic transmission interposed between an engine and the wheels of a vehicle is controlled by hydraulic circuits and hydraulically-operated clutches. A shift valve assembly is supplied with oil pressure in accordance with the extent of opening of the throttle of the engine, as well as vehicle governor pressure acting as a vehicle speed signal. The shift valve assembly not only functions to control operation of hydraulic clutches but also acts as a malfunction-preventive valve which operates to impede engagement of the reverse transmission clutch during forward running of the vehicle at a speed higher than a predetermined vehicle speed, irrespective of the throttle valve opening.
