A nickel-metal hydride battery is provided with a positive electrode and a negative electrode including hydrogen absorbing alloys. The hydrogen absorbing alloys of the negative electrode include a first hydrogen absorbing alloy and a second hydrogen absorbing alloy having a higher hydrogen equilibrium dissociation pressure than the first hydrogen absorbing alloy. Each hydrogen absorbing alloy includes an element A having high affinity for hydrogen and an element B having low affinity for hydrogen. The ratio of a substance amount of the element B to a substance amount of the element A is greater in the second hydrogen absorbing alloy than the first hydrogen absorbing alloy.

Nickel-metal hydride battery

A method for manufacturing an alkaline battery includes assembling an alkaline battery with a positive electrode, a negative electrode, a separator, and an electrolyte. The positive electrode includes cobalt and a positive electrode active material particle, which has a main component that is nickel hydroxide. The positive electrode active material particle has a coating layer that includes cobalt oxyhydroxide. At least one of the positive electrode, the negative electrode, and the electrolyte includes a tungsten element. The method further includes charging the assembled alkaline battery so that the cobalt in the positive electrode is deposited as cobalt oxyhydroxide on a surface of the positive electrode active material particle.

Alkaline battery and method for manufacturing alkaline battery

A nickel-hydrogen storage battery includes a positive electrode, a negative electrode using an ABbased hydrogen-absorbing alloy, and a separator arranged between the positive and negative electrodes. The ABbased hydrogen-absorbing alloy includes an A element, which is a constituent element of a misch metal, and a B element, which includes nickel and cobalt. The ratio of the amount of substance of the B element to that of the A element is 5.2 or more and 5.4 or less. There are provided a positive electrode active material for an alkaline storage battery, a positive electrode for an alkaline storage battery, and an alkaline storage battery each of which has an excellent output characteristics and also has an excellent self-discharge characteristic and an excellent cycle lifetime characteristic. The positive electrode active material for an alkaline storage battery according to the present invention has nickel hydroxide particles each containing at least magnesium in a solid solution state and a cobalt compound layer coating the surface of each of the nickel hydroxide particles. Among them, the cobalt compound layer contains cobalt having an average valence of not less than 2.6 and not more than 3.0 and also contains sodium at a proportion of less than 0.10 wt % to the total weight of the cobalt compound layer. The positive electrode active material for an alkaline storage battery according to the present invention has a conductivity smaller than 1.0&#xd7;10S/cm in a state pressurized at 39.2 MPa.

A positive electrode for a lithium secondary battery provided by the present invention includes an electrically conductive layer and an active material layer on a surface of a positive electrode current collector. The electrically conductive layer contains at least one type of water-insoluble polymer that is soluble in an organic solvent as a binder, the active material layer contains at least one type of water-soluble and/or water-dispersible polymer that dissolves or disperses in water as a binder, and a mass ratio (B/A) of mass (B) per unit surface area of the binder in the active material layer to mass (A) per unit surface area of the binder in the electrically conductive layer satisfies a relationship of 0.06&#x2266;B/A&#x2266;0.35.

The invention provides a positive electrode for lithium secondary batteries, comprising a conductive layer overlaid on the surface of a positive electrode collector, and an active material layer overlaid on the conductive layer, wherein the conductive layer comprises at least one water-insoluble polymer, as a binder, that is soluble in organic solvents, and a conductive material; the active material layer comprises at least one aqueous polymer, as a binder, that is soluble or dispersible in water, a positive electrode active material, and a conductive material; and the average particle size (D) of the conductive material in the conductive layer is smaller than the average particle size (D) of the conductive material in the active material layer.

Positive electrode for lithium secondary batteries and use thereof

A nickel-metal hydride battery that reduces the amount of cobalt and improves battery durability. The battery includes a negative electrode formed from an ABhydrogen-absorbing alloy. The alloy includes an A element composed of Misch metal and a B element mainly composed of nickel. The nickel in the B element is partially replaced by at least one further element including cobalt. The alloy is formed to satisfy at least the conditions of a mol ratio of the B element relative to the A element being 5.25 or greater, the amount of cobalt for 1 mol of the A element being 0.15 mol to 0.25 mol, and the alloy having a half-width ratio, which indicates the ratio of a peak half-width of a (002) plane relative to a peak half-width of a (200) plane, of 1.3 to 1.7.

A hydrogen absorbing alloy powder includes an intermetallic compound having an ABtype crystal structure and containing La for an A site element and Ni for a B site element. The powder contains La by 20 wt % or more and metallic Ni by from 2.0 wt % to 10 wt %, and acicular or grain shape precipitates containing La(OH)are deposited on a surface thereof. The powder has an intensity ratio P/Psatisfying a relation: P/P&#x2267;0.02, where Pis a peak intensity appearing in the vicinity of: diffraction angle 2&#x3b8;=42.5 deg and showing (111) face of LaNiand Pis a peak intensity appearing in the vicinity of: diffraction angle 2&#x3b8;=15.8 deg and showing (100) face of La(OH)in the X-ray diffractometry using CuK&#x3b1; rays.

Hydrogen absorbing alloy powder and nickel-metal hydride battery using the same

A battery is adapted such that a nickel hydroxide particle group constituted of a number of nickel hydroxide particles filled in a void part of a positive electrode substrate contains, at a ratio of 15 wt % or less, small-diameter nickel hydroxide particles each having a particle diameter of 5 &#x3bc;m or less. The positive electrode substrate is configured such that a front-surface-side nickel layer and a back-surface-side nickel layer are made larger in thickness than a middle nickel layer, and an average thickness B of either the front-surface-side nickel layer or the back-surface-side nickel layer, which is thicker one, and an average thickness C of the middle nickel layer satisfy a relation of C/B&#x2267;0.6.

Battery

The present invention provides a battery prevented from causing a short circuit between a positive and negative electrode plates and a method of manufacturing the battery. This battery comprises an electrode plate assembly having a plurality of positive electrode plates and a plurality of negative electrode plates which are alternately laminated with separators interposed one by one between them. Each of the positive electrode plates and the negative electrode plates is configured to be curved to the same side in a lamination direction.

Battery and method of manufacturing the same

A particulate positive electrode active material for an alkaline storage battery comprising: (a) solid solution nickel hydroxide particles containing at least magnesium and (b) a coating layer comprising cobalt oxide being formed on the surface of the solid solution nickel hydroxide particles. The amount of magnesium contained in the solid solution nickel hydroxide particles (a) is not smaller than 2 mol % and not larger than 15 mol % of the total amount of metal elements contained in the solid solution nickel hydroxide particles (a). Positive electrode active material for alkaline storage battery, positive electrode and alkaline storage battery

Disclosed is an alkaline storage battery comprising: a positive electrode comprising nickel hydroxide; a negative electrode; and an electrolyte layer interposed between the positive electrode and the negative electrode. The electrolyte layer comprises a water absorbent polymer and an aqueous alkaline solution. The water absorbent polymer is obtained by saponification of a copolymer comprising 100 parts by weight of monomer (A) and 0.01 to 10 parts by weight of monomer (B). The monomer (A) has at least one group capable of being converted to a carboxyl group by saponification and has one polymerizable double bond, and the monomer (B) has two or more polymerizable double bonds.

Alkaline storage battery

In order to provide a positive electrode active material capable of producing an alkaline storage battery having a high discharge voltage and an excellent discharge characteristic and also provide a positive electrode and alkaline storage battery containing thereof, a positive electrode active material for an alkaline storage battery comprising a nickel hydroxide powder is used, in which the nickel hydroxide is a solid solution containing magnesium, the magnesium content in the nickel hydroxide is 2 to 7 mol % of all metallic elements contained in the nickel hydroxide, the tap density of the nickel hydroxide is 1.9 g/cm or more, the half-width of a peak attributed to (101) face near 2&thgr;&equals;37 to 40&deg; in a powder X-ray diffraction pattern of the nickel hydroxide by CuK&agr; radiation is 0.7 to 1.2&deg; and the sulfate ion content in the nickel hydroxide is 0.5 wt % or less.

Positive electrode active material for alkaline storage batteries, and positive electrode and alkaline storage battery using the same

An alkaline storage battery comprising an improved separator and having a high energy density and an excellent cycle life characteristic is disclosed. The alkaline storage battery in accordance with the present invention comprises a positive electrode including a nickel hydroxide material as an active material, a negative electrode, a separator and an electrolyte, wherein the nickel hydroxide material of the positive electrode contains at least Mn or is disposed with a coating of a cobalt oxide material on its surface and wherein the separator carries particles of a hydrophilic and insulating metal oxide directly attached to its surface. The metal oxide particle is preferably at least one selected from the group consisting of titanium oxide, aluminum oxide, zirconium oxide, potassium titanate, tungsten oxide, and zinc oxide. The most preferable one is anatase type TiO .
