A sheet conveying device includes: a sending unit configured to send an ultrasonic wave; a receiving unit positioned to face the sending unit across a conveyance path, along which a sheet is conveyed, and configured to receive a first ultrasonic wave, the first ultrasonic wave being an ultrasonic wave sent from the sending unit and passed through the sheet, and output a first voltage corresponding to the first ultrasonic wave; an adjusting unit configured to adjust the first voltage into an adjusted first voltage according to a setting; an amplification unit configured to amplify the adjusted first voltage by a preset amplification factor for multi-feed determination into an amplified first voltage; and a determining unit configured to determine whether or not multi-feed of the sheet has occurred based on the amplified first voltage.

In the case of magnetic head of magnetoresistance effect type whose breakdown voltage is as low as 0.3 V, it is impractical to ignore even a very small amount of static electricity that occurs during fabrication or use. In one embodiment, the desired magnetic head is produced by forming an SiOlayer on a silicon slider, thereby forming an SOI substrate; forming on the SOI substrate circuits to protect a TMR element from overvoltage and a read-write circuit; forming field effect transistors from an Si semiconductor layer (formed by reduction of the SiOlayer or epitaxial growth on the SiOlayer); forming three electrodes (source, gate, drain) on the Si semiconductor layer; forming a Schottky diode by Schottky contact (metal) with the Si semiconductor layer; forming overvoltage protective circuits of aluminum wiring on the SOI substrate; and forming a TMR element.

Magnetic head of magnetoresistance effect type and process for production thereof

Embodiments of the invention measure a flying height of a recording head. According to one embodiment, in a magnetic circuit comprising a recording head and a magnetic disk, a magnetic resistance changes when a flying height of a recording head fluctuates. A change in an impedance of a recording circuit is measured by making use of a recording current flown in a recording head when recording data indicates a change of a flying height of the recording head during data recording. The measured flying height can be used for stabilizing a recording operation in the magnetic disk device. This method is especially effective in a magnetic disk device based on the perpendicular magnetic recording system because an impedance largely changes in this type of magnetic disk device.

There is executed a predetermined check related to a function of the disk storage device, preferably at least one of a read test, a write servo test, or a write test, when the disk storage device is in a waiting state where the disk storage device has no access from a host. The read test and write servo test are used to search for a defective sector on a disk and reassign the defective sector. The write test is used to indicate an abnormal condition of a head. Furthermore, the disk storage device includes a detector for detecting the waiting state, and a check logic for executing a predetermined check.

Disk drive and write control method for a disk drive

A method and apparatus for improving the data readability in a disk drive is described. The disk drive uses an error recovery mode in which the rotational speed of the motor is decreased below the normal operating speed and a rereading is performed. The reduced speed lowers the energy generated in collisions with a foreign object and the data error length is shortened allowing data to be read which cannot be read at the normal operating speed.

A substrate for forming a liquid crystal display panel has panel forming areas 14 defined on a glass base plate 12. Patterns (such as wiring TAB areas 22) are defined on the glass base plate 12 within the panel forming areas. The panel forming areas and the patterns within the panel forming areas are defined in position and orientation with respect to a scribing line that passes through the center of the glass base plate such that when the glass base plate is divided along the scribing line, two base plates are formed that are identical to each other after one is rotated by 180 degrees. The resulting halves of the original base plate thus do not include the wasted area that conventionally needs to be cut off when the panel forming areas and patterns are not formed with such position and image symmetry. A large margin is also assured, which facilitates cutting and improves the production yield. It also allows the image area portion of the panel forming areas to be enlarged.
