The present invention provides an electrode for an electric double layer capacitor comprising high energy density, low degradation of electrostatic capacitance and resistance with passage of time even using under high voltage, i.e., excellent long-term reliability. The electrode for the electric double layer capacitor comprises polarizing electrode materials containing porous carbon particles, an auxiliary conducting agent, tungsten oxide powders, and binders; conductive adhesive containing a conductive material and a poly-N-vinylacetamide (PNVA)-based binder; and a sheet current collector.

Disclosed is a polarizable electrode material for an electric double layer capacitor with a high energy density and excellent long-term reliability, as well as an electric double layer capacitor in which the polarizable electrode material is used. The polarizable electrode material includes porous carbon particles, a conductive assistant, a tungsten oxide powder and a binder, wherein the tungsten oxide is dispersed in the polarizable electrode material so that the tungsten oxide per 1 g of the polarizable electrode material has a surface area of 0.2 mor more and less than 6 m.

Polarizable electrode material and electric double layer capacitor using same

Disclosed is an electric double layer capacitor comprising a polarizable electrode layer that contains an activated carbon, a conductive agent, and a binder, wherein an external specific surface area of the activated carbon (defined as a specific surface area calculated from a nitrogen absorption isotherm by a t-plot method by excluding micropores of pore diameter smaller than 20 angstroms), per unit volume of the polarizable electrode layer, lies within a range of 450 to 800 m/cm, and a volume based on inter-particle interstices per unit volume of the polarizable electrode layer lies within a range of 0.05 to 0.12 cm/cm. The electric double layer capacitor according to the present invention is particularly suited to large current, quick discharge applications.
