A continuous casting apparatus comprises continuously supplying molten metal from a tundish to a cooled mold having an inlet and an outlet at least through a break ring, forming a cast section by continuously cooling the molten metal in the mold and starting the solidification of the molten metal below its surface, and intermittently withdrawing the cast section with respect to the mold through its outlet. During continuous casting, a sealing gas having a pressure higher than atmospheric and being soluble in the molten metal is invariable supplied to the entirety of the contact area of the mold and the break ring.

Process for producing thin cast strip

A continuous casting method includes the steps of continuously supplying molten metal into a mold through at least one feed nozzle connected to the mold through a break ring, with the feed nozzle, the mold and the break ring forming at least a portion of a continuous casting apparatus, and intermittently withdrawing a cast piece formed from the molten metal in the mold thereby creating pressure in a space formed at a connecting point between the break ring, the mold and the cast piece as a result of the withdrawal from the mold. A shield means is placed to seal-off space between the at least one feed nozzle, and the mold to prevent entry of gas into the continuous casting apparatus and the pressure is reduced in the sealed-off space to thereby eliminate a pressure differential between the pressure in the sealed-off space and the pressure created in the space formed at the connecting point between the break ring, the mold and the cast piece during the intermittent withdrawal from the mold.

Horizontal continuous casting method and apparatus

In a method and apparatus for withdrawing a strand in a horizontal continuous casting installation, the strand is withdrawn from a mold by a predetermined stroke and then retracted by a smaller stroke corresponding to shrinkage of the strand. This cycle of withdrawal and retraction is repeated intermittently. A strand withdrawing and retracting characteristic of a cycle is set in a control unit, and pinch rolls for withdrawing and retracting the strand are controlled based on the set characteristic. Actual withdrawing and retracting strokes of the strand are detected by a detecting device and the detected signal is compared with the set characteristic to produce an instruction signal which is fed back to the pinch rolls, so that the positional accuracy of the strand and the quality of the strand are improved.

The present invention relates to a steelmaking process, in which the molten pig iron produced in a blast furnace is desiliconized, dephosphorized, decarburized and desulfurized. The characteristic of this invention is a sequence and combination of the refining steps. Namely, the steelmaking process of this invention has individual separate refining steps for realizing a removal reaction of the impurities. The objective reaction is the desiliconization in the first step, the dephosphorization in the second step, the decarburization in the third step and the desulfurization in the fourth step.

An apparatus for determining carbon contents in molten metal comprising an entrance chamber with an entry port in a side wall, a sampling chamber, a ring-shaped disk to be set between both chambers and a temperature sensing means which is protected from the flowing sample metal by a protective thermal insulation member, protruding through the entrance chamber to the sampling chamber. The molten metal flowing from the entry port is cooled by contacting with the protective thermal insulation member. The insulation member will turn to be a riser when the sample metal starts solidifying in the sampling chamber. Thus enabling precise rapid carbon determination and simultaneously offering appropriate specimen for spectrographic analysis.
