A color filter layer is formed on a glass substrate of a counter substrate. A bank pattern is formed of the same material as a red color-filter portion, a green color filter portion and a blue color filter portion of the color filter layer at the outside of the color filter layer on the glass substrate in the same step. A light shielding material is coated in a bank between the bank pattern and the color filter layer to form a light shielding layer. The light shielding layer can be formed so as to be continuous with the peripheral edge of the color filter layer. The light shielding layer is less likely to overlap with the inside of a display frame portion of the liquid crystal panel, and the aperture ratio is less likely to be reduced. The number of manufacturing steps of the light shielding layer is reduced.

A liquid crystal display device comprises a first substrate, a columnar spacer formed on the first substrate and exhibiting light shielding properties, an alignment film formed to covet at least a part of the columnar spacer, a second substrate arranged to face the first substrate with a predetermined gap provided by the columnar spacer between the first and second substrates, and a liquid crystal material arranged within the gap. The columnar spacer is tapered in the forward direction as viewed from the first substrate in that portion of the columnar spacer which is positioned closest to the second substrate and has the largest diameter portion in the region other than that region of the columnar spacer which is positioned closest to the first substrate.

Liquid crystal display device and method of manufacturing the same

A demultiplexing/GOP head detecting section detects a PCR value, while a recording/reproduction control section records a video or audio packet in a bit stream file and records information on the number of packets every PCR value and GOP. In reproduction, a reproduction position corresponding to a shift time is judged on the basis of information on the number of packets at every PCR value and GOP. This improves the shifting and returning speeds to time shift reproduction.

Active matrix type liquid crystal display

A liquid crystal display device comprises a first substrate, plural pixel electrodes arranged in rows and columns on the first substrate, plural switching elements, an end of the conduction path of each of the switching elements being connected to a corresponding one of the pixel electrodes, a second substrate that is opposed to the first substrate, a common electrode formed on the second substrate and opposed to the pixel electrodes, a liquid crystal material with spontaneous polarization sandwiched between the first and second substrates, plural signal line bundles arranged on the first substrate substantially parallel with one another along the columns, each of the signal line bundles comprising a predetermined number of signal lines and each of the signal lines being connected to the other end of the conduction path of each of selected switching elements arranged along a corresponding one of the columns, plural scanning lines arranged on the first substrate substantially parallel with one another along the rows and connected to the control terminals of the switching elements, and plural drivers each for driving a predetermined number of scanning lines. The drivers correspond in number to the signal lines of each of the signal line bundles, and each of the drivers drives corresponding scanning lines.

Liquid crystal display device and driving method therefor

It is an object of this invention to provide an active matrix type liquid crystal display which uses a ferroelectric liquid crystal or antiferroelectric liquid crystal, which has a high response speed, a wide angle of field, and a high contrast, and which does not cause a 'step response' phenomenon. An active matrix type liquid crystal display according to this invention includes pixel electrodes arranged in a matrix form, first switching devices arranged in a one-to-one correspondence with the pixel electrodes, signal lines for transmitting an image signal to the pixel electrodes via the first switching devices, scanning lines arranged to cross the signal lines to transmit a scanning signal for turning on the first switching devices, storage capacitance lines arranged parallel to the scanning lines to form storage capacitances between the storage capacitance lines and the pixel electrodes, and second switching devices arranged in a one-to-one correspondence with the pixel electrodes to connect pixel electrodes assigned to one scanning line to a storage capacitance line, while another scanning line is being selected, thereby resetting the pixel electrodes.

This invention provides a method of manufacturing a liquid crystal display, including the steps of forming an orientation film on a major surface of each of first and second substrates, performing an orientation treatment for the orientation films, performing an orientation relaxation treatment for a portion of the orientation film of each of the first and second substrates, thereby forming a first region and a second region whose orientation degree is smaller than the orientation degree of the first region, arranging the first and second substrates so that the first and second regions of the first substrate and the second and first regions of the second substrate oppose each other, respectively, and that a liquid crystal material has a splay deformation, and injecting the liquid crystal material between the first and second substrates thus arranged to oppose each other.

A liquid crystal display device comprising a liquid crystal cell including a pair of substrates each having an alignment film on the surface thereof, and a liquid crystal filled in a space between the substrates, which is provided with a plurality of alignment regions, each region having the direction of alignment or the rise direction of liquid crystal molecule different from another region within a display region. The alignment film comprises a polyimide having a glass transition point of 300.degree. to 400.degree. C., a skeleton having no two-revolution axis, non-conjugated carbon occupying 10 to 60% of the total number of carbon excluding carbon atoms directly connected to imido group, a relative dielectric constant of 4 to 7 at a frequency of 1kH and at a temperature of 20.degree. C., or an imidization degree of not less than 90%, or a polyimide obtained by reacting tetracarboxylic acid di-anhydride with a di-amine compound, or a polyimide obtained by imidizing a polyimide, the tetracarboxylic acid di-anhydride moiety being prohibited of the free rotation thereof.

Liquid crystal display device

A reflective direct-view type display device including a first substrate having two major surfaces and electrode provided on a first major surface, a second substrate having two major surfaces and color filter layers and pixel electrodes provided on a first major surface, a light-scattering medium interposed between the first and second substrates positioned with the electrode opposes the pixel electrodes, and at least one color filter layer provided on the first major surface of the first substrate and apposing at least one of the color filter layers provided on the first major surface of the second substrate. The display can produce high-luminance colors, by using external light at high efficiency and with a low consumption of electric power.
