A network system enables monitoring the status of peripheral devices from computers without concentrating a load on the network. A specific device driver that runs on a specific computer connected to the network has an initialization command transmission unit that sends a first initialization command to the specific printer when a process command is sent to a specific printer, and an operating status monitoring unit that, after initialization based on the first initialization command is completed, monitors the operating status of the specific printer until the printer power turns off. Because the specific computer does not initialize and does not monitor the operating status of the specific printer until the computer sends a process command, concentrating a load on the network is avoided when the network system starts up.

Method of monitoring the status of a peripheral device, and a computer and network system

A host computer is connected to a printer that prints text according to settings specifying a text printing format. Using a function of a driver setup program, the host computer acquires a file set including an MOT file (recording device settings data) and a corresponding INF file (control device settings data) that are configured to produce the same or substantially the same printout as a printer with different printing format specifications, and configures settings stored in a registry that is referenced by a printer driver based on the acquired INF file. Using a function of a firmware setup program, the host computer generates or updates settings based on the MOT file.

An output control data generating device for controlling an output device includes a character selection unit that receives a selection of a desired character code set and a desired character from a group containing at least one character code set that can be used on the output control data generating device; a font selection unit that receives a selection of output font data, which is information for outputting the selected character to the output device, from among a plurality of different font groups disposed to the output device; a mapping unit that produces a font group definition file that stores the selected character mapped to the output font data; and an output control unit that controls output to the output device, using the font group definition file.

A printing system and a printing control method for a printing system that enables automatically resumption of printing after recovering from a printing interrupt event without adding any changes to the conventional page printer, serial printer, line printer, or other type of printer and without needing to monitor which page is being printed when a printing interrupt event occurs. A reprint data management unit temporarily stores one page of print data to which page end information is added. A printing completion monitor monitors reception of a completion report that is sent by the printer when the printer reads the page end information. When the printing completion monitor detects the completion report, the reprint data management unit deletes the stored page of print data. A print interruption monitor detects if a printing interrupt event occurs during printing. If the print interruption monitor detects an interrupt and the cause of the interrupt is then corrected, the reprint data management unit sends the stored page of print data to the POS printer from the beginning again.
