There is provided a sensor including a sensor element, a substrate on which the sensor element is disposed, and a casing that accommodates the substrate. The casing has a doughnut shape, and has a connecting portion for externally connecting a wire. In a doughnut-shaped internal space of the casing, the substrate is disposed, and the wire is disposed in the connecting portion from a side of the substrate far from the connecting portion. A central cylinder portion is interposed between the substrate and the wire.

The present invention is to provide a glow plug ( ) with an ion current detecting function, which is mounted in a combustion chamber of a Diesel engine. The glow plug includes an insulator ( ); a heating element ( ) embedded in the insulator and energized through a pair of lead wires ( ) to generate heat; and an ion current detecting electrode ( ) embedded in the insulator with a portion exposed into a flame in the combustion chamber so that an ionization state in the flame can be detected. The heating element of the glow plug promotes ignition and combustion of fuel in the combustion chamber ( ) due to its heating action caused when running the heating element hot. The ion current detecting electrode detects an ionization state in the combustion flame. When detecting ion current, the ion current detecting electrode and the adjacent inner wall of the combustion chamber form two electrodes for capturing positive and negative ions existing between both when burning the fuel. In such structure, the ion current can be detected precisely in spite of very simple structure. It is therefore possible to effectively use the information for combustion control. Further, since the ion current detecting function is added to the glow plug, an inexpensive ion current detecting sensor can be provided.

A signal processing device is provided which is designed to process an output of a piezoelectric sensor to produce a signal which indicates a load applied to the piezoelectric sensor accurately without being affected adversely by leakage current occurring in the piezoelectric sensor and electrical disturbances. The signal processing device includes a differentiating circuit which differentiates the output of the piezoelectric sensor and an integrating circuit which integrates an output of the differentiating circuit to produce an output signal as a function of the output of the piezoelectric sensor. The frequency range of the output signal is selected based on a frequency range of the load applied to the piezoelectric sensor.

In an installation structure of a glow plug with a combustion pressure sensor, a seat surface is provided in an installation hole formed in the engine so as to penetrate from outside into a combustion chamber of the engine. A contact surface is formed in the glow plug. The glow plug is partly inserted into the installation hole and is fixed via a ring shaped gasket to the engine so that the glow plug comes in pressurized contact with the engine in an axial direction of the installation hole. With the installation structure mentioned above, the elastic member is elastically more deformable in an axial direction of the installation hole than a portion of the glow plug on which the combustion pressure sensor is mounted.

The spark plug has a spark discharge portion bonded by, for example, resistance welding to at least one of the electrodes and made of a base metal containing at least 90 wt % of chromium (Cr). A stress-relieving portion having a thermal expansion coefficient intermediate in value between those of the electrode and the spark discharge portion may be formed between the electrode and the spark discharge portion.
