A disk assembly, which includes a large number of magnetic disks arranged in layers on a disk loading hub, is detachably mounted on a rotating shaft of an air spindle motor that is set on a base. The base has thereon a movable table capable of reciprocation. The movable table carries thereon a rotary positioner for rotating and positioning a stacked head assembly, which is formed of a large number of magnetic heads stacked in layers, and a plurality of ramps for loading into and unloading the magnetic heads from the magnetic disks. The distance between the respective rotating shafts of the air spindle motor and the rotary positioner can be adjusted by moving the movable table.

A magnetic disk drive comprises a motor having a substantially cylindrical rotor, and three magnetic disks each having a center hole in which the rotor is inserted, and fitted on the outer circumferential surface of the rotor. The magnetic disks are displaced in a direction along the diameter of the rotor so that the inner circumferential edge of each magnetic disk defining the center hole is pressed against the outer circumferential surface of the rotor. The magnetic disks are fixed to the rotor by a fixing member mounted on the rotor. A counterweight for correcting the balance of the magnetic disk in rotation is mounted on the fixing member in the vicinity of that region of the outer circumferential surface of the rotor against which the inner circumferential edges of the magnetic disks are pressed.

Method for assembling the actuator mechanisms of a magnetic disk

A carriage mechanism for a magnetic disc includes a head arm rotatable around a rotational center. A slider is supported by the head arm and arranged such that its principal axis forms a specified angle with a straight line passing through the rotational center of the head arm and a center of the slider, so as to reduce the yaw angle of the slider. A magnetic head having a magnetic gap is provided in the slider. The principal axis of the gap passes through the center of, and extends in the lengthwise direction of the gap. The magnetic head is so arranged that an extension of the principal axis of the magnetic gap passes through the rotational center of the head arm and forms a specified angle with the principal axis of the slider, in order to reduce the azimuth angle of the gap.

The rotary actuator comprises sector-shaped magnets, with a coil located therebetween. A flexible printed cable is fixed on one surface of the coil, and opposes the magnets. The flexible printed cable extends inside the coil. The innermost end of a conductive wire constituting the coil is connected to the flexible printed cable inside the coil, without being guided between the coil and the magnets. Power is supplied to the coil through a cable located between the coil and the magnets. The coil generates a magnetic flux in response to the input current. A force acts on the coil by way of an interaction between the magnetic flux from the coil and the magnetic flux from the magnets. For this reason, the coil rotates about a rotating shaft of a head-support mechanism mounted on the coil. The head is then moved and positioned at a target track.
