The present invention relates to a new PTC device having a configuration with which protrusion of solder paste and/or an excess portion of epoxy resin do not adversely affect a jig. Such PTC devicecomprises a PTC memberand leadsandelectrically connected to both sides of the PTC member the PTC member comprises a PTC elementand metal electrodesandplaced on both sides of the PTC element respectively, each lead is electrically connected to the metal electrode respectively via an electrically conductive connection portion, and at least oneof the leads has a concave portion which is defined with a bottom portionlocated adjacently to the metal electrode of the PTC member and a wall portionsurrounding the electrically conductive connection portion which connects the leads to the metal electrode.

PTC device

The present invention relates to a new PTC device having a configuration with which protrusion of solder paste and/or an excess portion of epoxy resin do not adversely affect a jig. Such PTC deviceincludes a PTC memberand leadsandelectrically connected to both sides of the PTC member. The PTC member includes a PTC elementand metal electrodesandplaced on both sides of the PTC element respectively, and each lead is electrically connected to the metal electrode via an electrically conductive connection portion. At least one of the leadshas a concave portion which is defined with a bottom portionlocated adjacently to the metal electrode of the PTC member and a wall portionsurrounding the electrically conductive connection portion which connects the leads to the metal electrode.

The present invention provides a PTC device having the larger rated current and/or the larger rated voltage. The PTC device includes a plurality of laminar PTC components which are laminated via an insulation layer and has a first end portion and a second end portion. Each PTC component includes a PTC element which is defined by a first main surface and a second main surface which face to each other, and is terminated at the first end portion and the second end portion, as well as a first laminar electrode which is disposed on the first main surface and a second laminar electrode which is disposed on the second main surface, The PTC device has a first side electrode which is common to the plurality of the PTC components at the first end portion and a second side electrode which is common to the plurality of PTC components at the second end portion, The first laminar electrode of each PTC component extends to the first end portion; the second laminar electrode of each PTC component extends to the second end portion. As a result, the plurality of PTC components are connected in parallel with each other between the first side electrode and the second side electrode, The plurality of the PTC components in the laminated state are such that the first laminar electrode is positioned as an outer most first electrode at one outermost portion of the laminated plurality of the PTC components and the second laminar electrode is positioned as the outermost second electrode at the other outermost portion of the laminated plurality of the PTC component. A first electrically conductive element is positioned on the outside of the outermost first electrode and a second electrically conductive element is positioned on the outside of the outermost second electrode; the first electrically conductive element is electrically connected, directly or indirectly, to the first side electrode; and the second electrically conductive element is electrically connected, directly or indirectly, to the second side electrode.

There is provided a PTC device wherein its PTC element functions appropriately even when the PTC device is used in an environment in which solvent is present. The PTC device includes: (1) a polymer PTC component including a polymer PTC element and a first and a second metal electrodes disposed on both sides of the main surface thereof; (2) a lead connected to at least one of the metal electrodes of the polymer PTC component; and (3) a ceramic package having an open-ended space for accommodating the polymer PTC component, said open-ended space having at least one opening that defines the open-ended space. The lead closes said opening in order to isolate the polymer PTC component disposed in said open-ended space from the environment surrounding the ceramic package.

There are provided a process for manufacturing a PTC device as well as a PTC device manufactured by such process wherein a resin coating for preventing the oxidation can be easily formed. The PTC device includes (A) a polymer PTC component () comprising: (a1) an electrically conductive filler, and (a2) a polymer material wherein the polymer PTC component is defined by opposite main surfaces and a side surface connecting outer peripheries of these main surfaces, and (B) layered metal electrodes () placed on the main surfaces on both sides of the polymer PTC component. The PTC device has a support member () extending outward from a periphery of at least one of the main surfaces, and the side surface of the polymer PTC component is sealed from an ambient environment around the PTC device by a cured curable resin () disposed and supported on the support member.

PTC device and process for manufacturing the same

There is provided a PTC device which allows compact connection as much as possible. Such PTC device includes a polymer PTC element () including (A) a polymer PTC component () an electrically conductive filler, and a polymer material; and (B) a metal electrode () placed on at least one surface of the polymer PTC component. Also present are a lead () of which at least a part is positioned on the metal electrode of the PTC element; a protective coating () which surrounds an exposed area of the PTC element, and a hardened solder paste which is present as a connection area () which electrically connects the metal electrode and said at least a part of the lead.

A thermistor is provided with a third electrode placed so that it is not in contact with either the first or second electrode, and with a heating part integrally formed with the same material as the variable resistance part and in contact with the third electrode, the heating part changing the resistance value of the variable resistance part by generating heat when current passes between the third electrode and either of the first or second electrodes.

A PTC device is provided which is capable of surely functioning as the PTC device even in a wiring through which a large current flows. A combined PTC device () is composed of two PTC devices each containing a lamellar PTC element () which is composed of a polymeric PTC material and a pair of electrodes (and) which are arranged apart from each other on one side of the PTC element. The electrodes () of one PTC device are respectively opposite to the electrodes () of the other PTC device, and terminals () are arranged between the respective opposite electrodes. The respective opposite electrodes and the terminal between them are electrically connected with each other.
