A control apparatus for an internal combustion engine for adjusting an amount of air passing through a catalyst during fuel cut-off operation of the internal combustion engine, the temperature of the catalyst is caused to rise, when the fuel cut-off operation of the internal combustion engine is carried out in a state where the temperature of the catalyst is low. The apparatus is constructed such that in cases where the fuel cut-off operation is carried out in a state where the temperature of the catalyst is relatively low but equal to or higher than an activation temperature thereof, the amount of air passing through the catalyst is made larger in a period of time in which the catalyst becomes a rich atmosphere immediately after the start of the fuel cut-off operation, in comparison with a subsequent period of time in which the catalyst becomes a lean atmosphere.

The exhaust purification system comprises an exhaust purification catalyst, downstream side air-fuel ratio sensor, and control device. The control device performs average air-fuel ratio control which alternately sets a target average air-fuel ratio between a rich air-fuel ratio and a lean air-fuel ratio and inter-cylinder air-fuel ratio control which controls the target air-fuel ratios of the cylinders so that the target air-fuel ratio becomes the rich air-fuel ratio at least at one cylinder among the plurality of cylinders even if the target average air-fuel ratio is set to the lean air-fuel ratio. In a control apparatus for an internal combustion engine in which processing of regenerating the NOx storage capacity of an NSR catalyst is carried out in accompany with processing of diagnosing an abnormality in an exhaust gas purification device including the NSR catalyst, the present invention is intended to suppress the fluctuation of torque at the time of regenerating the NOx storage capacity of the NSR catalyst, and to terminate abnormality diagnostic processing quickly. According to the invention, by setting an engine air fuel ratio, which has been set to a lean air fuel ratio before the processing of regenerating the NOx storage capacity of the NSR catalyst is started, to a weak lean air fuel ratio which is lower than a basic lean air fuel ratio and higher than a stoichiometric air fuel ratio, it becomes possible to suppress the fluctuation of torque at the time of regeneration processing being started, and to terminate abnormality diagnostic processing at an early period of time.

Control apparatus for an internal combustion engine

An EGR apparatus includes a EGR passage and an EGR valve provided in the EGR passage to regulate an EGR flow rate in the EGR passage. An ECU closes the EGR valve from an open state prior to start of deceleration of the engine based on engine rotation speed detected by a rotation speed sensor, accelerator opening degree detected by an accelerator sensor, and actual opening degree of the EGR valve. During deceleration of the engine, the ECU obtains a target opening degree of the EGR valve according to the separately detected engine rotation speed and accelerator opening degree from a target opening degree map and starts to close the EGR valve when a difference between an actual opening degree and the target opening degree of the EGR valve exceeds a predetermined value.

In average air-fuel ratio control, the average air-fuel ratio is controlled so that the lean shift amount when controlling the average air-fuel ratio to the lean air-fuel ratio becomes smaller than the rich shift amount when controlling the average air-fuel ratio to the rich air-fuel ratio.

A control apparatus of an internal combustion engine which is capable of a lean burn operation and which includes a catalyst which is provided in an exhaust passage of the internal combustion engine and which has an oxidizing ability, a supercharger; an in-passage injection valve which injects fuel into an intake passage; an in-cylinder injection valve which injects fuel into a cylinder, and a variable valve apparatus which changes at least one of an opening timing of an intake valve and a closing timing of an exhaust valve. In a region where the engine load is less than a first predetermined value, only a second exhaust valve that opens and closes a second exhaust passageway that bypasses a turbine of a supercharger is opened. In a region where the engine load is greater than or equal to the first predetermined value and less than a second predetermined value, both the second exhaust valve and a first exhaust valve that opens and closes a first exhaust passageway that leads to the turbine are opened. In a region where the engine load is greater than or equal to the second predetermined value, only the first exhaust valve is opened. A predetermined value for the time of lean combustion is set lower than a predetermined value for the time of stoichiometric combustion.

Cylinders of an internal combustion engine are divided into at least two cylinder groups. First air-fuel ratio sensors are disposed in each exhaust branch pipe connected to the cylinder groups, and a second air-fuel ratio sensor is disposed in a common exhaust pipe upstream from the catalyst. When a vapor amount introduced into an intake passage during purge control is determined, the vapor amount is determined during normal operation using output values from the first air-fuel ratio sensors and the vapor amount value learned during normal operation. During rich-lean operation, the vapor amount is determined using the output value from the second air-fuel ratio sensor and the vapor amount value learned during rich-lean operation. Thereby, the vapor amount introduced into the intake passage when a switch is made from normal to rich-lean operation of the internal combustion engine is accurately determined.

A hybrid vehicle including an engine, a generator capable of generating power by being driven by the engine, an electric motor capable of running on power supplied from the generator, a power split device that transmits output from the engine to a driving wheel and the generator and also transmits output from the electric motor to the driving wheel, and a main ECU that controls an output ratio of the engine and an output ratio of the electric motor using the power split device according to the running state of the vehicle. When the operating mode of the engine is switched between a lean burn operating mode and a stoichiometric burn operating mode, the main ECU selectively increases and decreases the output ratio of the electric motor so that the total output, which is the combined output of the engine and the electric motor, is constant.

In a V-type six cylinder engine, cylinder groups are provided in which a plurality of cylinders are arranged divided into left and right first and second banks. An intake pipe, a first exhaust pipe, and a second exhaust pipe are connected to the cylinder groups of the banks. A first upstream three-way catalyst and a first control valve are provided in one exhaust pipe while a second upstream three-way catalyst and a second control valve are provided in the other exhaust pipe. The exhaust pipes are communicated together upstream of the upstream three-way catalysts and the control valves by a communicating pipe. A third control valve that adjusts the flowrate of exhaust gas is provided in the communicating pipe.
