The polysulfone hollow fiber membrane of the invention has an inner dense skin layer composed of a polysulfone and a less amount of a polyvinylpyrrolidone, a content of the polyvinylpyrrolidone in the dense skin layer being higher than that in an outer surface layer. This membrane has excellent biocompatibility and antithrombogenetic ability and is, therefore, useful in body fluid treatment, such as hemodialysis, hemofiltration and hemoconcentration, without clogging with thrombi.

A membrane-type artificial lung adapted to perform exchange of gases between blood and a gas through a membrane by passing blood over one side of the membrane and oxygen or an oxygen-containing gas over the other side, said membrane being a hollow fiber membrane which is composed mainly of a polyolefin, has an inside diameter of 10 to 500 micrometers, a thickness of 5 to 100 micrometers, a porosity of 7 to 50% and an oxygen flux, Q(O.sub.2), of at least 1.times.10.sup.-6 [cm.sup.3 (STP)/(cm.sup.2.sec.cmHg)] and is substantially impermeable to ethanol.

Artificial lung and method of using it

Disclosed is a fluid treating apparatus of hollow fiber type. The apparatus can prevent channeling or stagnation of the fluid which flows inside it by specifying the densities of the hollow fibers and the warps forming a hollow fiber sheet and the laminating conditions for laminating the hollow fiber sheets to form a laminate which is to be housed in a housing.

The polysulfone hollow fiber membrane provided by the present invention can prohibit bacteria, bacilli, viruses and the like, and is therefore useful, besides as an industrial filter for water purification, as a membrane for body fluid filtration or condensation. A reinforced therapeutic tube which is excellent in kink resistance, pressure resistance and flexibility. The tube is made of an elastomeric material with a reinforcing material spirally embedded into the tube wall, and at least one of the tubular parts where no spiral reinforcing material exists. An apparatus for extracorporeal lung assist including a pump device having a flexible blood reservoir housed in a rigid housing, which pump device is able to expand and contract the blood reservoir by pumping liquid into and from the housing, thereby repeating cycles of blood feed and blood take-off, a blood take-off circuit connected to the in-flow side of a membrane artificial lung and in which the pump device is disposed, a blood feed circuit connected to the out-flow side of the membrane artificial lung, the two circuits forming an extracorporeal circulation circuit, a liquid circulation circuit connected to the housing of the pump device and having a flexible liquid reservoir disposed therein with a head provided relative to the pump device, and sensors for detecting the expansion and contraction of the liquid reservoirs, whereby blood in-flow and out-flow paths are controlled so that when the blood reservoir is contracted, blood is drawn into the blood reservoir under subpressure in the housing, whereas when the blood reservoir is expanded, blood is discharged from the blood reservoir under pressure developed in the housing. The apparatus of the invention provides respiratory aids safely for a long period of time and is therefore useful for treatment of acute respiratory failure cases.

C. for 20 minutes to 3 hours.
