The first object of the present invention is to provide a PDP with improved panel brightness which is achieved by improving the efficiency in conversion from discharge energy to visible rays. The second object of the present invention is to provide a PDP with improved panel life which is achieved by improving the protecting layer protecting the dielectrics glass layer. To achieve the first object, the present invention sets the amount of xenon in the discharge gas to the range of 10% by volume to less than 100% by volume, and sets the charging pressure for the discharge gas to the range of 500 to 760 Torr which is higher than conventional charging pressures. With such construction, the panel brightness increases. Also, to achieve the second object, the present invention has, on the surface of the dielectric glass layer, a protecting layer consisting of an alkaline earth oxide with (100)-face or (110)-face orientation. The protecting layer, which may be formed by using thermal Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) method, plasma enhanced CVD method, or a vapor deposition method with irradiation of ion or electron beam, will have a high sputtering resistance and effectively protect the dielectrics glass layer. Such a protecting layer contributes to the improvement of the panel life.

Method of producing plasma display panel with protective layer of an alkaline earth oxide

An electrode plate, a method of manufacturing the same, a gas discharge panel using an electrode plate, and a method of manufacturing the same are provided by incorporating a relatively simple structure, which can keep electrodes formed on a plate from peeling or becoming misaligned. In the electrode plate, at least one electrode is formed and adhered to a main surface of a plate by a thick film or thin film formation method, wherein of all ends of the electrode, at least an end opposite to an end at a power supply point is adhered to the main surface of the plate with stronger adhesion than the other parts of the electrode. When this electrode plate is used as a front panel glass having a plurality of pairs of display electrodes in a gas discharge panel, at least an end of each bus line opposite to an end at a power supply point is firmly adhered to the surface of the front panel glass, thereby keeping the bus lines formed on respective transparent electrodes from warping and peeling away or becoming misaligned. Such a gas discharge panel can deliver excellent display performance.

A PDP does not suffer from dielectric breakdown even though a dielectric layer is thin, with the problems of conventional PDPs, such as cracks appearing in the glass substrates during the production of the PDP being avoided. To do so, the surface of silver electrodes of the PDP is coated with a 0.1-10 &mgr;m layer of a metallic oxide, on whose surface OH groups exist, such as ZnO, ZrO , MgO, TiO , Al O , and Cr O . The metallic oxide layer is then coated with the dielectric layer. It is preferable to form the metallic oxide layer with the CVD method. The surface of a metallic electrode can be coated with a metallic oxide, which is then coated with a dielectric layer. The dielectric layer can be made of a metallic oxide with a vacuum process method or the plasma thermal spraying method. The dielectric layer formed on electrodes with the CVD method is remarkably thin and flawless. When the dielectric layer is formed with the vacuum process method or the plasma spraying method, warping and cracks conventionally caused by baking the dielectric layer are prevented. Here, borosilicate glass including 6.5% or less by weight of alkali can be used as the glass substrate.

There is provided a plastic base material having a reformed layer formed on a plastic substrate by reforming the surface layer thereof into a component containing fluorine at the ratio of the number of fluorine atoms to the number of carbon atoms, F/C, of 0.85 or more and 1.30 or less, and having highly durable water repellency and ink repellency. The method of manufacturing such a plastic base material comprises a step of reforming the surface of the plastic substrate into a fluorine-containing carbon layer by imparting a specific energy to fluorine-containing plasma by applying an RF bias voltage to the plastic substrate to form a surface having highly durable water repellency and ink repellency. A highly durable ink-jet printer that enables high-quality printing can be provided by the use of a head for an ink-jet printer fabricated by using this plastic base material.

A gas discharge panel in which cell filled with a discharge gas are arranged as a matrix between a pair of opposed plates, and in which a pair of display electrodes on a surface of one of the pair of opposed plates extend across a plurality of cells in the direction of rows, where a gap between the pair of display electrodes has two discharge gap widths one of which is larger than the other. The voltage is lowered and the power consumption is properly restricted by starting the discharge at the discharge gap at a space having the smaller gap width. An excellent discharge efficiency is secured by sustaining the discharge at a space having the larger gap width.

A plasma display (PDP) manufacturing method and display panel includes a display electrode forming step of forming a plurality of pairs of display electrodes in parallel lines on a main surface of a first plate, and a plate sealing step of aligning the main surface of the first plate with a main surface of a second plate, and sealing the first and second plates together. The display electrodes are formed by coating the main surface of the first plate with display electrode material, and performing laser ablation on parts of the display electrode material, while the remaining parts of the display electrode material form the display electrodes.
