A method of surface treating an aluminum alloy base body of an heat exchanger which method enables an etching procedure to be carried out uniformly and quickly and a corrosion-resistant chemical conversion coating to be formed, is effected by pretreating the Al heat exchanger base body with an aqueous pre-treating liquid having a pH of 9.0 or less, etching the pretreated base body with an aqueous alkaline solution having a pH of 9.0 or more, and then subjecting the etched base body to a chemical conversion treatment or a hydrophilicity-enhancing treatment.

An aluminum alloy heat exchanger having excellent hydrophilicity and resistance to absorption or impregnation of tobacco odorous components has an organic hydrophilic coating layer formed on at least a portion of a base body of the heat exchanger and containing (A) at least one chitosan compound, (B) at least one two or more carboxyl group-containing organic compound and (C) at least one hydrophilic polymeric substance different from the components (A) and (B), in which the total solid content of components (A) and (B) is 20 mass % or more and the solid content of component (C) is 0.1 to 10 mass %.

An aluminum alloy heat exchanger resistive to impregnation of tobacco odor includes a base body of an aluminum alloy heat exchanger and an organic hydrophilic coating layer formed on the surface of the heat exchanger base body, and including a component (A) containing a chitosan compound selected from chitosan and derivatives thereof, and a component (B) containing a carboxylic compound having two or more carboxyl groups per molecule thereof, in a total solid amount of the components (A) and (B) of 20% by mass or more, based on the total amount by mass of the organic hydrophilic coating layer.

Hydrophilic modification method and heat exchanger treated thereby

An aluminum-containing metal material for, for example, a heat-exchanger for motorcars is surface-treated by chemically etching an Al-containing metal material surface, forming a first protective layer on the etched surface by a chemical conversion treatment with an aqueous solution of Zr phosphate or Ti phosphate, and coating the first protective layer with a second protective layer containing a hydrophilic resin including non-cross-linked hydrophilic functional groups and at least partially cross-linked reactive functional groups different from the hydrophilic functional groups, to impart high hydrophilicity and resistance to odor generation and corrosion to the aluminum-containing metal material surface.
